Watery Domestic is f'n amazing, as well as CRCR. Westing is pretty lame.

I especially disagree about Watery Domestic.

I'm sure I'm biased against it because I don't really like EP's in general. It may be better than I'm giving it credit for but I still have no use for it. I'll stand by Westing being garbage though and Slanted being superior to CRCR.

I think I prefer Slanted these days, too, but I'd hardly call CRCR a big drop-off. It's a change in direction, and it displays a whole other side to what they could do. After that you get the drop-offs.

Since this poll is about what Monty should buy next - and assuming he likes the three albums he already has - I'm gonna go ahead and vote for CRCR.

I've constantly shifted back and forth between that and S+E as my favorite Pavement album (and WZ, too, for a little while), but since Monty already has the last three Pavement albums and is coming at them as a fan of Jicks-era stuff, I think CRCR is the logical next step. He can continue to work his way backwards from there, but Westing isn't entirely necessary.

But as jewels said, you really could just go ahead and get both S+E and CRCR immediately, preferably the expanded editions. Chances are slim that you'll regret the purchase.

This is all pretty good advice.

Oh and we've been down this road 5 dozen times but my favorite Pavement albums are CRCR and Terror Twilight followed by Slanted, Brighten and then a little distance to Wowee

Westing is terrible and I'm still mad at myself for buying it.

Seems Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain -- & there is a deluxe version of this, no? -- will be the choice.

As is, Wowee Zowee was my entry point to Pavement, mid or late '95, I think, & got Brighten the Corners (to which I listened to six times, maybe, at the time; & having heard it again, & realizing it's a Pavementian take on arena-rock, I can see why my 17 years old self would have liked it so much) when it was released. Ditto for Terror Twilite (which, any other year, might have been my favourite release for the year; sucks it came out same time as Utopia Parkway, Soft Bulletin, Slim Shady LP, & Clarity, plus 2001 (which I never managed to buy on disc)). Just have never felt the need, 'til now, to reach back to the pre-WZ stuff.

I will report back on CRCR after the weekend, then.

(Also: glad to see Bloor chime in on this. I thought he -- along with Dreaded Marco? -- were the biggest CRCR booster, to the detriment, even, of S&E, but wasn't sure. Still, it's not quite enough. I was hoping for an epic internet argument between Bloor & Marco, & Spade Kitty & Jewelz (who I recall as the biggest S&E fans); any flame-wars with Spade are always hot. (OPA! -- come back. We need you!))

There are deluxe versions of the first four Pavement albums (S+E through BtC), and all are reasonably priced and packed with solid, relevant material, especially the first two. I wouldn't just recommend the deluxe versions of S+E and CRCR for die-hards but for pretty much anyone interested in Pavement.

You disappointed he didn't go straight for S+E? I'm sure he'll get there eventually.

I have a theory that one's favorite Pavement album between S+E and CRCR is the one that person first heard.
Box Elder is the only reason to have Westing. Watery, Domestic is great, though not remotely essential.
Seeing them live at Coachella was mind-blowing. Will be seeing them again at Pitchfork and SummerStage. When I saw them in 1997 in Chicago it was definitely mixed, the Metro show was awesome but the Double Door was weak. Based on their Coachella performance, this tour should not be missed.

a fairly common opinion, and a good one to have.

i don't have a super strong preference between S&E and Crooked Rain, they fit different moods perfectly.

I guess my point is that those 4 songs, although great, don't elevate them to a much higher level than their LP's already do. And, conversely, their absence wouldn't change most people's opinions about Pavement.
