Since this poll is about what Monty should buy next - and assuming he likes the three albums he already has - I'm gonna go ahead and vote for CRCR.
I've constantly shifted back and forth between that and S+E as my favorite Pavement album (and WZ, too, for a little while), but since Monty already has the last three Pavement albums and is coming at them as a fan of Jicks-era stuff, I think CRCR is the logical next step. He can continue to work his way backwards from there, but Westing isn't entirely necessary.
But as jewels said, you really could just go ahead and get both S+E and CRCR immediately, preferably the expanded editions. Chances are slim that you'll regret the purchase.
This is all pretty good advice.
Seems Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain -- & there is a deluxe version of this, no? -- will be the choice.
As is, Wowee Zowee was my entry point to Pavement, mid or late '95, I think, & got Brighten the Corners (to which I listened to six times, maybe, at the time; & having heard it again, & realizing it's a Pavementian take on arena-rock, I can see why my 17 years old self would have liked it so much) when it was released. Ditto for Terror Twilite (which, any other year, might have been my favourite release for the year; sucks it came out same time as Utopia Parkway, Soft Bulletin, Slim Shady LP, & Clarity, plus 2001 (which I never managed to buy on disc)). Just have never felt the need, 'til now, to reach back to the pre-WZ stuff.
I will report back on CRCR after the weekend, then.
(Also: glad to see Bloor chime in on this. I thought he -- along with Dreaded Marco? -- were the biggest CRCR booster, to the detriment, even, of S&E, but wasn't sure. Still, it's not quite enough. I was hoping for an epic internet argument between Bloor & Marco, & Spade Kitty & Jewelz (who I recall as the biggest S&E fans); any flame-wars with Spade are always hot. (OPA! -- come back. We
need you!))
