Also, Lowery is right, but what needs to be done is to try to figure out how to make things work in today's environment rather than just wishing for a return to days gone by because for good or ill, the clock does not run backwards.

When you put it that way...I completely agree with you. Lowery's right but it's probably way too late. RIAA should have been organizing a PR campaign with thoughtful, intelligent artists like Lowery making this sort of case 10 years ago instead of or at the very least in addition to suing their customers.

It may be a subtle difference but the way you put it I agree with but when some idiot with a blog doesn't acknowledge that Lowery's right and compares the suggestion that Labels and artists should still have a say in the pricing of their product (eg its worth something and shouldn't be stolen) with attempting to bring back smith corona type writers, I get the urge to punch them in the face or break into their house and steal all their furniture.

"...is the fact that there are too many artists competing for shrinking dollars, largely due to the shift from albums to singles. Despite the economic number that David Lowery quoted of the number of professional musicians falling by 25%, if you took "album releases" as an indicator, it seems like the number of pros has increased. In a decade, we've gone from about 30,000 albums being released to over 77,000 last year. And that's just albums going thru legit channels. The problem, as noted by Chris Muratore of Nielsen on the previously noted New Music Seminar panel, is that 94% of those releases sold less than 1,000 units. Indicators that I have examined showed those low sales aren't because of people stealing them. They come from too many releases causing most people to not even realize they are out."

I've said it before, it's too easy to make music nowadays

I haven't read the follow-ups, but I thought the NPR girl's opinions were reflective of a lot of peoples.

Her argument that "I've never illegally downloaded" followed by "I sat in the radio station and ripped everything onto my laptop" is a nice illustration that some people just don't get it.

"Here's my well-reasoned opinion on the moral compass of the youth of today, the failure of the music industry and its economy, and some anecdotes about how stolen music may or may not have killed Chestnut."

*heads off to the TwentyTwelve thread...*

But don't worry, if I really like the album, I will totally buy it later to support the artist.
