Sorry if this has been posted before.
I finally had a chance to sit down and listen to the entire disc the other day and honestly, except for "Soul Meets Body" it's not good at all. Big drop off as compared to their previous work.
Agree or disagree?
In between. I'm not entirely sold on it, but I don't actively dislike it. It doesn't feel like a step forward from
Transatlanticism, which I think it should. What I hear is a band a bit afraid of offending the long-time fans by drastically changing their sound, but straining at the limits of what their well-established style allows them to do.
If I were a label exec at Atlantic, I'd be disappointed as hell - this is definitely not the album they were hoping for. I don't hear a lot of OC-worthy anthems like
Transatlanticism was full of, which is precisely what Atlantic wanted from them. Anyone know how many albums Death Cab chained themselves to Atlantic for? I'm curious to see if this is going to be a one shot deal for them, and it's back to Barsuk for the next album.
