Yeah some of these I have a really hard time wanting to check out based on the covers.

But there's still plenty of things in this thread that I really want to hear.

There has been times in life where I will take this album over anything Can ever put out. Kraut-folk? It's great. One day I'll write a lengthy piece about this after it becomes my favorite album ever.

That's all fine and good, but aside from being German and from the '70s, I don't see why this would ever be compared to Can.

because it's German and from the 70s. And because Can is the most popular and well known of bands that fit within those parameters and a band that I really love.

I'll browse this thread in more detail later, but given the amount of prog, southern rock, and stuff like James Taylor's sister, there seems to be a lot I will skip over. That Dependables record and Marcos Valle do look interesting, though, I must say.

is there something you're looking for in particular?

That's all fine and good, but your Can comparison had me scrambling to hear it.

It does seem pretty good, though.

I mean I didn't really compare it, just stated a preference to another german band and then the next work said Kraut-Folk which is quite a bit different from Can

This thread could use some more terrible album art

Barbara and Ernie - Prelude To

This one probably has a very limited audience here, but it's really good so I'm gonna post it anyway. Soul session singer Barbara Massey and Jazz Guitarist Ernie Calabresa (played w/ Harry Belafonte in the 60's) one-off project. It's a bit hard to classify and sometimes gets called folk funk or funk folk. There's bits of folk, a soulful groove, jazz, and psychedelic pop. The duo are backed by a bunch of rock and jazz players including Ralph McDonald on percussion, Joe Beck on Guitars, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Grady Tate on drums. Eumir Deodato handles the orchestration. I bought it a couple of years ago after reading comparisons to some of Charles Stepney's productions on Cadet/Chess Records such as the Rotary Connection. It also has somethings in common with Arthur Verocai.

It's hard to descibe though so IF the art and description haven't completely turned you off yet, just check out this:

Has this one been mentioned yet? If not, it should have! All you ipodders/tuners/whatever may have this filed under 2006, when Orange Twin finally released it.

Sibylle Baier - Colour Green

Underground folk stuff that was lost for 30-something years. Her voice is dreamy but not cutesy, more kinda haunting...but not too scary.

From allmusic:
Quote:
Baier, who would silently haul out the tape machine and press record late at night when her family was asleep, conveys the purest of intimacies with the kind of confidence only secrecy can afford.

Not his best album, but it's not off-putting (as some poorly executed folk can be IMO) and hits the spot when I'm in the mood. I really like the acoustic guitar playing.

Jesus, don't know how I forgot about this '71 debut until just now:

David Bromberg~S/T- Bromberg had been kicking around for several years as a lot of artists' go-to side man. Hugely talented guitar player, he has a reedy, wobbly voice that probably is off-putting to some (or many). The album shows off a range of styles, from acoustic blues-influenced songs to covers of traditional numbers to one co-written by George Harrison of all people (playing guitar on it for the album as well). A mixture of studio and live recordings, this album slapped me pretty hard on first listen, and has kept its appeal with me for all this time. Sammy's Song still makes me stop whatever I'm doing to sit down and listen.
