The Dixie Chicks
Yeah, they have the pretty, stupid, Country Product image.
Fact: They are pretty damn good musicians.
Fact: They have many excellent songs.

Just get past the image and the audience and listen to the music.
Sure, some of it is pretty crappy. But they are a much better band than you would expect them to be.

I am sure that many of you will rush to disagree with me on this one. But, it's all about the music, and I like it.

I've always liked what I've heard from this band.

EDIT: really interested in the new one with Rubin producing.

Some songs are okay, and they are very talented musicians. But there might not be a song I hate more than that attrocious Earl song.

That's a helluva an endorsement. Not as convincing as "better than a sharp stick in the eye", though.

i was in my sister's car over the holidays and heard three carrie underwood songs.

fact: i have no idea who this girl is. my sister says she was on "american idol."
fact: i was sick with a viral infection during the holidays.

i think i liked one of the songs, though. i did not expect that.

It depends what you're assuming everyone else here would expect from a band most of us have heard a good deal of.

I think their cover of "Landslide" is as unimaginative as a cover can be, and that most of their songs lack real emotional appeal. I agree that they're good musicians, but disagree that they have "many" excellent songs. They've written a few good hooks that have carried entire albums.

EDIT: also, I like you Todd, but the way you wear your open-mindedness toward music as a badge, as if most of "the rest of the board" (your words from another thread) don't share that quality, is getting insulting.

Well, given their genre, they are expected to deliver crappy product. My point is, they deliver a lot more. They do what they have to to have a career in an industry that defined "follow the leader", but they have some pretty sharp chops, too -- instrumentally, vocally, and song-wise.

The crap is there, but there's not a lot of it to dig through to get to the good stuff.

What's wrong with their genre? Lots of good music has come from country. Admittedly not much lately, but there's always good stuff there.

Not so much Country, as a whole... just the mainstream (of which they are a part) as late.

But yeah, I agree with you. I'm a big country music fan. Been looking for a good Dolly Parton comp recently. It's a pretty big hole in my collection. (insert joke about two big holes, here.)

I think alot of the problems with mainstream country since the 80's has been production.

But yeah, take away some of the production and guys like George Strait and Brad Paisely would sound alot better to these ears because I think there's good stuff there.

I do like what I've heard of Patty Griffin, which is not much.
Also a big Nancy Griffith fan.

My wife wanted the Chix' album, to support them during that politial thing, when they spoke out against Bush. Plus, she liked what she heard, too.

Even lamer than making unwarranted assumptions about other peoples' assumptions?

Painting yourself as a martyr:
Image

When you're really just a sellout:
Quote:
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines was singing a new tune late Friday, this time in the form of an apology to President Bush for saying she was ashamed that he was from Texas.

"As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect," Maines said in her latest statement.

How does Natalie feel about airbrushing on magazine covers?
