LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Notching the best opening sales week of her career with her eighth studio album, "The Emancipation of Mimi" (Island/IDJMG), Mariah Carey unseats 50 Cent from his six-week reign in the top post on the Billboard 200.

"Mimi" moved 404,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, putting her well ahead of 50 Cent's "The Massacre," as well as new albums by Mudvayne and Garbage.

Carey last reached the Billboard 200 summit in 1997 with "Butterfly" (Columbia), which started with 235,000 copies and has sold 3.7 million to date.

Hailed in advertisements as "the return of the voice," Carey's latest is considered by many to be a comeback for the once untouchable superstar. In 2002, her Island debut, "Charmbracelet," managed a No. 3 opening with 241,000 copies and has so far sold 1.1 million. That set followed a brief stint at Virgin that was marked by the much-maligned all-Carey soundtrack to the universally panned film "Glitter."

404,000 copies in the U.S.? I call bullshit!

I saw this on Billboard. I'm just outright surprised not only that it debuted at #1, but that this record beats her other records as far as first week sales. Shocked. Maybe the Beyonce-esque album cover helped kick a few copies out the door. Does she actually have a single on the radio right now? It's weird that Glitter barely goes gold, but this sells 400,000 in its first week? Nuts...

Also, Garbage will have their highest chart debut ever as well at #4. I doubt it will end up pushing as many copies as Version 2.0 or the debut though.

this used to happen with everyone on the cash money and no limit rosters. everytime anyone like master p or silkk the shocker or juvenile would release an album it would go at least top ten without any hype. my friend and i (who btw, was into master p because he was like the vanilla ice of dirty south, so crappy its hilarious) would always ask each other, who the hell is buying these guys albums??? the best we came up with is that they bought hundreds of copies themselves.

you have no idea how big Master P was. Even before the rest of the nation heard about them. UNLV was the shit. RIP Yellow Boy. Mystikal was actually pretty good when he was local.

I've followed this in a cursory manner at best, cuz she annoys the shit outta me.

But I think she's been promoting this new album pretty heavily - hitting all the big TV shows, etc. That would partially explain the big initial numbers. Plus, I think it's being marketed as kind of her "comeback" record...& America looooooooves a comeback.

Anyway...that's my semi-informed, half-awake take on the subject.

Also, she shakes her fake boobs a lot. That helps.

But she's always done that, eh? It wouldn't explain why this record's taken off like it has.

I can't believe I've posted twice about this now. lol.

That's true, but now she's the "veteran diva who also happens to have big, fake boobs" instead of the "squirrly young headcase who also happens to have big, fake boobs."

It's a matter of maturity and respect, you know.

Do you know for certain they're fake. I've always thought they looked pretty real to me.

No, sorry, I don't. Being the respectful sort I am, I always look her straight in the eye.

I understand. For the record, I think they're real. If she enhanced herself, she'd been in porn star territory.

After hearing Garbage's latest, I'd be willing to spin Mariah's disc. It couldn't be any worse.

In that one shot of her in the red dress, yeah I guess one could make an argument. But when you look at the pictures, she's filled out quite a lot in 8-10 years which will definitely add to the cleavage. I have to say I'm still not convinced. If it is fake, then it's certainly not 'awful'. There are worse examples on that site for sure.

I'm surprised that her career has been on the decline since 1999 yet she manages somehow to lodge a career-high 400,000 in first week sales for her new album that appeared to be as highly anticipated as a turd from dubya's ass.
