65 isn't really very old these days.

What a loss for music that someone with such a true and enduring passion has died before his time.

A sad loss for the music world he was a champion of some great bands. Now i'm gonna have to play 'Teenage kicks' as a tribute.

this saddens me very much. he was definitely a favorite of mine. i didn't listen as much as i wanted, but i heard him enough for this to impact greatly upon me.

and i just played "teenage kicks" on my radio show last week. maybe i'll slip it in again this week to pay homage to him.

I learned of his death a few hours ago and I am still shocked and upset. John was almost a father-figure to me. I listened to his show religiously for 15 years. Like so many others it was him that introduced me to techno, drum n' bass, dub and reggae, hundreds of indie bands and everything else mainstream radio shuns.

About 4 years ago, when I first got internet access at home, I sent and e-mail to him during his show asking which shops to visit when I was in London. I didn't really expect a reply, but I got one asking for my phone number. The next time he play some records back to back he phoned me at home and went to great length to tell me which shops to go to and where they were etc. I spoke to him a few more times and even met him once.

Even if you disregard every band he helped break through, every genre of music he introduced to an unsuspecting public, he was just the greatest, kindest, funniest, most sincere person you could possible imagine.

Once when I told him he was one of my heros and greatest influences he said I must be "pretty sad then!". Well, John, I am now.

I wonder if he got as far as getting caught up in the football riot at Motherwell v Aberdeen. He always remembered who I was because of that!
