I think if I bought 1 more stones album it might be emotional rescue. Far from their highpoint but to my ears at least enjoyable enough. And to Radcliffe's point, at least its not just regurgitation of the same songs only slightly varied.

Man, I just realized that Hunk Georgia = Bloor? Peps gotta stop changing names. Its hard to follow who's who anymore especially since I turned off avatars to speed up thread loading.

Apologies to Hunk Ga, I gotta admit I thought you were the Senator under a different name and half of what was going through my head when i told you to get over yourself was you call Marquee Moon and Funhouse crap and then act like Exile is above debate.

Exile IS above debate, and Funhouse and Marquee Moon are unlistenable..not unlistenable, but certainly not near the top of any list I would make...

Hunk GA is Bloor, and he won't agree with the above points, b/c he's a fan of Marquee Moon.

And, i agreed with 1/2 yr. point about Exile. I wouldn't start there, but you gotta end up there.

Personally, I'd burn every copy of every Rolling Stones album ever pressed before giving up my copies of Marquee Moon and Funhouse, but that's just me.

anything with MICK TAYLOR on it.

Ron Wood should've stuck with Rod Stewart, as well as um...playing the bass.

I was actually going to start this same thread asking for Stones album suggestions after re-visiting Sticky Fingers last weekend.

December's Children needs more love.

Its never mentioned by anyone as one of their better albums. Not top five, but def. top ten stones album in my mind. And probably the best Stones album that no one talks about.

Can we agree on this, senator?

Yessir, we can....

I understand that my love for all things Stones is irrational, and on many levels, I like their later albums BECAUSE they aren't any good. Hard to explain...but just realize that the fact that Ronnie was smoking $5000 a day of freebase when they were recording Undercover adds to my love and the overall mongerousness of them and that album.

Oh, and billy, I'd be happy to swap a burn of Undercover + a Worst of 80s-90s Stones comp for maybe some kind of afro funk mix or even a country mix.

Dude, no need to explain. I'll point out that you're talking to someone who'd rather watch Cleopatra Jones than Citizen Kane.

I could easily put together an Afro funk mix....if you want a country mix you better let me know what stuff you already own.

I didn't pick Exile because of the obvious go-to choice, but because it spreads its wings a little further than straight ahead rock and adds some variety.

Personally, my favorite is Sticky Fingers. It's just got a punch to it that I like more than the others.

Beggars Banquet however, wraps up with "Salt of the Earth", which is just too fucking good, especially with beer.

"salt of the earth" is musical perfection.

I agree that Exile is the magnum opus, it exceeded who they were, and is probably one of the greatest rock works of all time. In 100 years it will be listened to and while no work by Spoon, Pavement, Mercury Rev... and yes, I am sorry, Radiohead, will ever be known. 30 years later, I am still hearing new things in Exile. I lived and breathed the Stones... I remember rushing home with Sticky Fingers when it was released the first day... a bunch of us gathered in the dorm room at Sproul Hall, UCLA, and reverently put on the first track... hands shaking, a tightness in the chest, awful expectation, rock and roll of that power was thought to be able to change human consciousness, lay waste to societal structures, it invoked primal nihilistic energy and the appetite for destruction was holy and total. As it happened, of course, it was just good music. It was an honor to live in a time, however, when music was so important.

But having said that, admitting that level of worship for the Stones, Exile and Aftermath are the only ones I still put on to listen to...

The correct order is:

Exile
Let it Bleed
Aftermath
Beggar's Banguet
Sticky Fingers
December's Children

If these fit, go back chronologically. I still think the early bluesy ones are underappreciated.

"correct" is correct. (Wry kid...archness is 'sposed to be funny)

I personally have seen Pavement 6-7 times, Malkmus 3 times, and I couldn't be bothered with a Stones presented-by-geritol-and-dilaudid tour... I knew the anarchist dream was over when there was a Mastercard with a StickyMouth on it. The last time any person will listen to Pavement will be in 2067. I was kinda hoping it would be me, advance in medical science and whatever.

Another good, rawkin', late period Stones song - Highwire (studio track from the Flashpoint live album)

I guess I'm really in the minority when I say that the US version of Between The Buttons is my favorite album.

In response to the first post, though.. I say if it's not the SACD hybrids, then don't bother. The sound quality on them is so much better that buying the old ones now seems like a poor choice, price or not.

Exile is my favorite one, and I have never felt any need to apologize for it. How did we get though this entire thread detailing elements of Tattoo You and Voodoo Lounge and nobody even mentions 12X5?

The world won't exist in 100 years so nobody will be listening to any of those bands, but to say Pavement and Radiohead will not have as long a legacy to their fans is pretty stupid.
