Unwound "Leaves Turn Inside You"

I remember this being pretty popular on cmj bb a few years ago. I don't think I've seen it in anyone's np for a long long time.

I was putting it on myself after not listening to it probably in 2 years, wondering whether I should trade it in. Its kicking my ass around my apartment though now in ways it never did. Maybe I wasn't playing it loud enough.

Any other fans of this? What else did we once love but now seem to ignore?

billy, I listened to that about a month ago. A pretty cool record and bizarre at times too. Reminds me of fall weather for some reason.

Here is one that was getting ridiculous love when I first started posting on CMJ. It rarely, if ever, gets mentioned anymore. If you were around then and deny that it wasn't then your full of shit because LOTS of people were all over it:

I'm with you on that. I just listened to Heartbreaker a month ago myself.

What about:

I don't think I've seen that in anyone's np in a long time. I probably haven't listened to it myself in a year or more.

Question is did people stop liking these albums, think a lot of newer releases are better, or just let 'em get lost in their collections?

i still love that ryan adams (or particular songs) and that burning brides album but in both cases their followups were disappointing.

It wasn't while I was on the board, but I listened to this a week or so ago, along with the rest of the Whiskeytown I've been playing recently. And I'm actually listening to Gold now.

I think they get lost in collections. I listen to Heartbreaker all the time.

A little bit like later era Sonic Youth in that they are experimental guitar rock with long extended jams and some distortion/feedback (not as much as S.Y.) but strong underlying melodies. There's a bit of shoegazy harmony to the vocals though (I hear some similarities to Ride)and more use of non-traditionally rock instruments such as harpsicord and cello than in either of those. AMG references Fugazi as well but I don't hear it as much personally.

Its a little hard to describe, thats probably as good as I can do.

I think Self's biggest fans from CMJ maybe didn't join obner or cut way back on their posts. I never much cared for Self myself.

Same may be true for Dplan although I'll say that they haven't aged that well for me. I think its probably something to do with my getting older and just not being in a mood for it that much. I can't quite bring myself to sell it or Change though.

I'm curious to see why others don't listen as much to all of these that much though. Does indie rock just not have much of a shelf life, or do people still like these but prefer to listen to whatever the flavor of the day is.

And Tommy, I've noticed your playing of those Whiskeytown discs and its made me think about pulling them out again which I'll probably do sometime soon.

you know, i forgot the Dplan even existed. and as far as Ryan Adams I listened to Gold last week (assuming it was good common ground when the majority of may family is on one room together) and it sorta just sounds like a gap commercial to me now.
oddly, i haven't seen any massive wrens posts in like 3 months.

I can vouch for Billy's description. That album is epic and huge.

That fits me pretty well. Since I put my Listmania 2 as a playlist, I hear individual tracks from some of these (D-Plan, Sigur Ros) when I need some comfort/familiarity. Also helps at the gym. Otherwise, I try to assimilate new releases and catch up on classics.

I think another thing that could happen is people getting turned off from an artist after a disappointing follow-up release. Burning Brides would be the best example of anything listed, and I know there was a fair amount of blah for D-Plan's Change.

Speaking of epic, I need to pull this out. Stupid storage.

I'm going to send you a few discs for the NCAA prize today or tomorrow---I'll throw in a copy of Leaves.... if you want. It is a great album that I haven't listened to in over a year. Need to remedy that.

I bought a replacement copy in mid-February and rocked that thing for at least a week straight. Darrin (konstantinl) is a huge fan as well. Chase likes one song on the album. There are others, I am sure.

That Lift to Experience cd is one of the exceptions that was a favorite of many a few years back and I still see regular np: posts for.

Off of the top of my head, I also still see a lot of np: of Spoon cds, MMJ cds, and maybe Drive-by Truckers cds but not much else from years ago get really regular play from many that I can think of off of the top of my head.

I cut way back on my purchases of new music (as opposed to old classics) because I was sick of things having short shelf lifes with me. Does this not bother people when they buy things, listen to 'em for a few months to a year and then let 'em get buried into their collections.

Does anyone still listen to:

Image

AMG 4.5 stars and a board favorite in the year it came out.

Not saying everyone needs to be like me but I'm curious whether people still like and listen to this stuff or not. Also curious what else I may be letting get buried in my collection that I should pull out to either renew my love for or put in the trade-in pile. Like I said, I was pleasantly surprised how much I like the Unwound.
