Speaking of epic, I need to pull this out. Stupid storage.

I bought a replacement copy in mid-February and rocked that thing for at least a week straight. Darrin (konstantinl) is a huge fan as well. Chase likes one song on the album. There are others, I am sure.

Yeah, I put this on about once a month.

I pulled out that Fugazi recently and also found I liked it more than I ever did.

Anniversary I traded in a long time ago. Not sure what I ever saw in them (apologies to onejeffbrown)

Pedro the Lion "Control" I think was a new discovery for some bb'ers last year and they are still high on FT's all time list.

I understand when major trends like all the garage rock from a few years ago come and go but it seems like most people listen to a few old favorites, some classics, and mostly new stuff.

Thinking about Sketch's argument about a bad new release souring the old catalog, I'm not sure I buy it. I can see when an album really hits it big and is irritatingly bad affecting your opinion of the band (thinking stuff like REM or U2). I think the song Stand ruined REM for me for about 10 years. But I don't understand why does a subpar Burning Brides or Dismemberment Plan album would taint an older release by them that you might have really enjoyed?

When's the last time anyone played this:

Image

I think Mojo might have been their biggest fan and he's posted here about 8 times only, but still there were a bunch of other fans I think. Its held up for me.

It just gets lost in shuffle of my collection. New Stuff and classic just seem to stay in the fore front of my thoughts, and usually I just grab what I can think of first before I leave in the morning. I still enjoy almost all of my "forgotten albums" if and when I get around to playing them.

I've been meaning to pull that one out for a listen again.

Anyone listen to this in a long time:

I think this was almost as popular as Malkmus' debut among bb'ers that year but I don't think I've noticed anyone play it in 2 years or more.

This thread makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I actually listened to PTL's Control the other day after DS Bruce played "Rapture" at the Plan.

It's good.
I haven't given it the required amount of listens, but after the first couple he seems to be in the same pocket as his last, 'Where Shall You Take Me' which isn't a bad thing at all. I'd still rank 'Rehearsals for Departure' and his 'loud' record 'I Break Chairs' as his best. Of course that may be premature and his new one could end up kicking my ass.

Do you think that this might be less because of some negative aspects in the music itself, and more because our boarders tend to be forward-looking, on the bleeding edge, always wanting to "make it new" and stuff as much new music in our ears as is possible?

I know that, if I was able to afford it, I would hardly be able to listen to albums more than once or twice before I was moving on to the next thing, and the next thing, and the next thing . . . I know that I will never have enough time in my life to hear all the music I want to hear, to read all the books I want to read, to see all the films that I want to see, to go to all the places I want to go . . . but I will do my damndest to in the time that I have!

RIYL ?

A little bit like later era Sonic Youth in that they are experimental guitar rock with long extended jams and some distortion/feedback (not as much as S.Y.) but strong underlying melodies. There's a bit of shoegazy harmony to the vocals though (I hear some similarities to Ride)and more use of non-traditionally rock instruments such as harpsicord and cello than in either of those. AMG references Fugazi as well but I don't hear it as much personally.

Its a little hard to describe, thats probably as good as I can do.

wow...that is a great description. i'm gonna have to check this one out.

I'm going to send you a few discs for the NCAA prize today or tomorrow---I'll throw in a copy of Leaves.... if you want. It is a great album that I haven't listened to in over a year. Need to remedy that.

that'd be much appreciated mike...thanks!!!

i haven't seen the following np'd recently despite the major love a few years back:

i am enjoying his new one a lot lately though.

i've been making a conscious effort to start bringing in a 1:1 ratio to work with me.
1 "old" cd to every 1 "new" cd.

That's part of what I'm asking I guess. For a couple of years I used to buy (mainly) or download hundreds of new releases each year for fear of missing out on something great. But there were 2 problems with that, it was hard to really digest everything I bought and I bought lots of stuff I ended up thinking were crap.

I've been much happier since I decided I wouldn't try to hear everything I was curious about but would be more discrimininating, so from my own personal perspective I would hate the idea of only listening to each cd once or twice. For my favorites, I couldn't imagine limiting myself to only 2 listens and for many I consider myself lucky to not have to listen to them once.

I still listen to the Creek that Drank the Cradle by the way and I'd guess many others still do. Lapalco is an interesting one. I never liked it much but I suspect a big part of it disappearing from favor is that many of the bigger powerpop fans don't post here as much.

here's two more I don't see much anymore:
