Hopefully it's not a Kia or Jetta.

Dalen, I can't tell you how often I agree with you, but in this you are wrong. At least in the majority, you may own a decent Jetta, but by and large they are awful. A quick look at consumer reports will tell you that. We have owned 3 different Jetta GLXs and all were awful to maintain, though when working, they were fun to drive. Now we are a Honda family.

We even won a LEMON law against VW for the first one!

see, i've heard the same thing, but i've owned one for the past 4 years and have had 0 problems. the best automotive decision i've ever made. a friend of mine had one as well, and he had the same luck.

i'd heard some bad things about bmw's as well, but my wife's car has been a blessing.

i guess we've been very lucky [knocks really hard on wood].

:)

gotta drop. and extra credits from last term transferred over. it worked out real nice.

and i didn't actually buy a car yet, but i did give them my piece of shit.

i will have one by tomorrow night. it will be relatively cheap (6k-8k)...but it will be newer than a 2000, so it's gonna be perfect for me.

Mazdas are pretty damn good cars. I bought a 626 back in 98 and it hasn't given me one bit of a problem. Has 120K on it and I'm going to keep it untill it grinds to a halt. When I get some scratch together, I'll buy a 6.

P.S. Every person I know who bought a Jetta has had major problems.

I know 4 owners of new Jettas who had to get fairly extensive repairs after only 2 months of ownership. True, they're not as bad as the Kia Sephia, but you got lucky.

Had a friend with a '97 jetta. His alternator went out at about 60k, so he went to the dealership to see if they'd cover it, because he got the car there 2 months prior with like 52k on it. They wanted $800.00 for the part, labor not included. For those that don't know, if an alternator costs you more than $250, then a gold nugget must be hidden in it somewhere. Their explanation (after I burst out laughing) was that it was a Bosch alternator, and was "factory spec." I replied "then give me the part number. If I don't find it at Pep Boys for 1/4 the price, I owe you lunch." They weren't into it. So Timmy and I got to learn how to change out an alternator!

I LOVE VW's. I love their attention to detail, and their designs are just beautiful, especially interiors. But until they get a handle on the reliability again, I'm a loyal, bored Toyota driver. Boring is cheap.

i always heard that it was mostly electrical problems with VWs. We've never had any problems with our golf, other than it doesn't make me feel very manly.

Had my Jetta for 3yrs, it's a 1999 model...and I wouldn't get another one...Crap load of little problems that quickly add up..Nothing bad with the engine or anything, but alot of trouble with the windows..going up, going down..getting stuck..you name it...Them damn window pieces add up...You don't really notice it when it still under warranty, but after that expires and you have to pay for that yourself...You notice ..

Mom bought a Passat GLX (VR6!) new in '97. With about 40k on it, it began to do this thing where if it was hot outside (in GA...!), it wouldn't start. It was electrical. She had the whole steering column replaced, which wiped out the fancy electronic odometer, but no dice, still did it. That cost her like $700 right there. It continued to sporadically do that until she traded it in to a different dealership for something else, something non-VW. Man that car was fun to drive though.

"Boring is cheap."

Hmmm, I dunno about that. My '91 Protege may look boring (and it has a crappy paint job), but that beeyotch can handle. I cannot believe how fast I can take the curvy onramps. I scare the shit out of my passenger friends. It's a blast to drive.

I bought the car for $500 from a friend at work, and wow, what a gem. I just had a hole in the gas tank repaired ($255) and new struts put on ($750- ow), and aside from tuneups, that's about the extent of the damage.

I was very lucky to get it. That thing cost a 1/4 what my bike did. :P

I will second the love on the Protege. I had one for 6 years, NEVER had any problems with it, got it for cheap, and it was totally reliable. You can't go wrong with Protege. Honda Civics are great too, but you get more bang for your buck with the Protege.

btw, I've also heard the same stories about Jettas... I haven't really heard a positive story from anyone yet (except Dalen, of course!).

I'm happy with my saab. but by some standards it's old and has high mileage. '93 with 150k doesn't phase me in the slightest. I drove it out here to Seattle from Michigan without the slightest problem. Aside from a dead batter it has never left me stranded.
