...the band that Wilco wishes it was? They sure sound like an enjoyable Wilco to me.

Am enjoying their new disc. Always seem to find a new way to make the same music sound different.

So if Wilco wants to break up, I guess the answer is yes.

this reminds me that the only time beulah played in pittsburgh was supporting wilco. maybe both bands learned a little from each other on that tour. i've also kinda thought of them in the same light.

I too, thought that they were no longer together. I would be interested in hearing this.

Hint, hint.

Haq. wins.

In this case, "new" might mean most recent, which would be Yoko. I like that record a lot but would take YHF any day of the week.

These bands don't seem similar to me.

I seriously doubt it considering Wilco has a much bigger fan base and is more respected in the industry.

I like Beulah, don't get me wrong, but they weren't even in the same league as Wilco.

Well they're similar in the way that Herbie and Jangle were both Santa's elves. Or that Val Kilmer and Curtis Armstong both played proto-nerds. Or that Inspector Clouseau and The Swedish Chef are both ethnic frauds. Um...or in the way that Elizabeth Montgomery didn't actually sleep with either Darrin. Or something.

Brass vs guitar. Happy hooky vs obtuse complexity. Both with underlying melancholy beneath the sweetness.
Both good.

Didn't "Yoko" come out 2 years ago?

Are you talking about a new new one?

Theres a funny story buried beneath all this. They did break up, I am sad about it, and my reference to their new album is actually a reference to their very old album which I never heard before (The Coast Is Never Clear)

I must read more.

And as far as one wishing it were the other, obviously Wilco would rather not be Beulah, but their music strikes me as something that Tweedy wishes he could put out. Diverse, catchy, listenable...probably a bunch of meaning buried beneath the surface.

Wilco were more comparable to Beulah during their Being There and Summerteeth days. Between YHF and AGiB, they now sound nothing like Beulah did to my ears. Maybe flashes here and there (the horns in "I'm the man who loves you" perhaps), but overall, I would say they are a different animal altogether.

I don't know, Beulah never put ten minutes of feedback at the end of a song.

Beulah>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Wilco

And I actually like Wilco. But the break-up of Beulah is the single biggest non-death-related tragedy to take place in the music world so far this century (all 5+ years of it). I hope beyond all hope that Miles Kurosky pursues a solo career, and doesn't pull a Mangum.

I hear it - not identical, and not trying to be Wilco, but there's something very Summerteeth-ish about the bits of Yoko I'm listening to at CDUniverse, not to mention that their singer's delivery is similar to Tweedy at times. But not that close - just close enough that people who like Summerteeth would probably like Yoko.

And I am adding this to my "to buy soon" list. I like.

I love Beulah but don't like Summerteeth much at all.

besides the one time i saw them in concert to a half full crowd, i've never really heard them (strange since they were my ex's favorite band)

but i suppose i should give them a listen.

Natural Mike's View:

All of the pre-Yoko material is very annoying due to the horn arrangements. I don't mind a little horn action in my life, but Beulah just don't know when to stop. The vocals are irritating at times, too.
