New Weezer is sort of like that new Liz Phair record if she actually seemed to put work into her songs instead of just writing some inane lyrics and letting her producers do all the work.

umm...have you listened to the lyrics of beverly hills

"where i come from isn't all that great
my automobile is a piece of crap
my fashion sense is a little wack
and my friends are just as screwy as me"

"Why can't I weeze whenever I think about you"

Am I the only one who just never really gave a crap about Weezer in the first plave? They always seemed too bland to me. A couple fun videos is about all that ever made me pay any attention at all.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure several people make a similar comment every time Weezer is talked about. They usually spell "place" right though.

I might like 'em a little better if they changed their name to The Weezer.

For whatever reason, all the bad reviews made me really want to buy this. I guess everyone loves watching the proverbial "trainwreck" sometimes.

It's pretty remarkable how completely unmemorable the album is after listening to it. It's almost like it's not even there. I'll give it a few spins. Blue and Pinkerton were both slow growers for me, although they also had their share of quick fix catchiness to tide you over until the rest of it sank in.

So, Weezer is probably done. The Mitchum review was lame in that he didn't really say why he didn't like it other than the lyrics. And Weezer always had awkwardly bad lyrics. But he may be on the money about loyalty giving Weezer some slack. I still think Green and Maladroit are decent pop rock albums, but loyalty can make you do weird things. As proof, I own a copy of Metallica's Re-Load, which came out almost decade after Metallica started suck and featured songs from the same studio sessions as Load which I had already decided was complete crap. And I still bought it.

Why do they gotta front?"

:?:

I'm not seeing a whole lotta difference.

the difference is that I would like to think that Buddy Holly's lyrics are intentionally ironic. Whereas Beverly Hills I'm not really quite so sure.

I heard this at work the other day.

Let me just say that it is a rare event that someone puts on a record at work that actually shifts me from a good mood to extreme crabbiness.

I tried to keep my mouth shut about it in case there were any Weezer fans around but...MAN... that album made me feel depressed about music.

Not to sound all gangsta-rap but the rhymes I was scribbling in grade 4 were a cut above the lyrics on this one.

Also: I'm the first to admit to my status as a full-on sentimental frou frou fox, but damn... what a load of useless MUSH.

Try listening to a Lite Rock station every work day for 3.5 years.

I listened to that song (This Is Such A Pity) that Rob Mitchum said was one of the only half-decent songs on the album and it doesn't even really sound like Weezer, except for the vocals. It just sounds generic.

I didn't buy this Weezer album to see/hear how creative/intelligent their lyrics were, but to enjoy it for what they set out to do...make simple, power pop songs for my enjoyment. Those albums in the 90's sucked me in for life when it comes to Weezer. (anyone read the james murphy interview yesterday? You'll see what i'm referring to if you did)

I've listened to 11 tracks so far and I like it for what it is. Beverly Hills is a great pop song in my opinion. If you don't like Weezer, ignore them.

Sorry, I know we've probably talked enough of this new Weezer. But I just listened to a mix cd with "Beverly Hills" on it and I had to say something since I didn't wiegh in before.

verdit= UTTER GARBAGE

Beleive me, I never thought I'd use that for a Weezer song, or album. But this is fucking crap.

Okay, that's it. Sorry.

I think I hate that song because it's so fucking insincere. Yeah ok Rivers, you've NEVER been to Beverly Hills. I'm sure you're not living in a goddamn ghetto somewhere. I'm really starting to actually HATE weezer now.

I actually think Beverly Hills is the only good song on the album. It's stupid, but in a fun way and the lyrics are quirky bad, rather than just bland bad like the rest of the album. For example, I like this line:

Look at all those movie stars
They're so beautiful and clean
When the housemaids scrub the floors
They get the spaces in between

Perfect Situation is Ok until the chorus. This is Such a Pity is OK but doesn't really sound like Weezer. The rest of the album is literally impossible to listen to the whole way through. Worst album I've paid money for since... well since Mike Doughty's Haughty Melodic. Which I will chose to blame on Dave Matthews and hope that M can recover from.

Agreed. It's not a great album, but it's nowhere near as awful as people want it to be (and yes, I really do believe Weezer-bashing is "in" now.) And listening to the entire Weezer catalog on shuffle, these new songs flow pretty well with the other songs (minus the horrid "Hold Me" and "Haunt You Everyday." Awful dreck.)

I wish I could find the pic online of Rivers on the cover of the Boston Phoenix today. He looks like a tool.

nah it wasn't that one. he's sitting on a fire hydrant (that looks comfortable) dressed in mostly yellow with one of those bucket hats on and he's got this look like he's about to cry because he didn't get picked for the kickball game.

OK, I've decided I also hate Beverly Hills. For me, it's more the rhythm of the song that I hate. There's absolutely no syncopation in the song (with the exception of the weird backing vocals in the chorus), which makes it sound flaccid and generic. It's all about, "listen to how fukin humongous these guitars sound!"

That, and the lyrics seem to mean exactly what they appear to mean. They remind me of Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl". At least that was a cover, so Gwen had only bad taste in other people's music.

I guess I won't buy this.
