Wish my eardrums luck (I'm DEFINITELY wearing earplugs to this one).

Mon. May 9 - LIGHTNING BOLT W/BUG SIZED MIND, VEGAN BRAND MOUTHPET & APPLE SNAILS @ Angle of View - Nashville

This is my first Lightning Bolt show, and I'm bringing my camera.

Shiv,

should I avoid it? It's a pretty nice camera.

Well I don't think you're going to get close enough to get any decent pictures of them unless you want to be in a heap of sweaty bodies. They usually set up on the floor instead of the stage and people just crowd around them.

edit: if you have another, not so nice camera i'd bring that instead.

There is no stage at Angle of View. It's that cool. I might take a disposable instead. I'm also 6'6", so I won't have much trouble seeing over the sweaty punks.

Yeah, you should stomp some sweaty punks while you're at it.

P.S. hope things are going well Stu; have fun at the show.....

Thanks for the heads up on this, btw. I had no idea they were touring, but they're gonna be in Atlanta on the 17th!

Unfortunately they'll be at the Drunken Unicorn, but it should be awesome anyway.

Am I the only one who thinks that Death From Above is 10X the band Lightning Bolt is in basically the same package?

LB are pretty intense live, but I was a little annoyed that I couldn't see them because they played on the floor.

DFA1979 is similar in that its a 2-dude setup, but other than that, I don't see too many similarities between the two bands. I do like em both, though.

You know the spot where your spine and neck meet? It kind of sticks out? You know, where old people with Osteoperosis have a big hump? Ok, so that place on my body is really fucking stiff and sore, and I'm kind of surprised that I didn't slip a disk last night. I hadn't head-banged that hard since I was 13 listening to Slayer in my parent's living room.

Apple Snails, a local band, played first doing some drone/textured guitar similar to Black Dice's Beaches & Canyons material. Obviously, I dug it.
Vegan Brand Mouthpet (another local) played Sonic Youth influenced guitar noise along w/ some art-school chick banging on a tom tom w/ 3 drum sticks, but the PA was across the room and behind the crowd, so it created this delay/surround effect that made the music seem disembodied. Bug Sized Mind was kind of boring, but his costume was something to look at. I took pics of all of the acts except Vegan Brand Mouthpet (I'll post the good ones when they're developed). BSM's set ended and Lighting Bolt were already setup, but had some technical difficulties that prevented the attempted seamless sets.

To be honest, I'm not *that* familiar with Lightning Bolt's back catalog, so they could've played some old stuff, but it pretty much sounded all the same. But w/ Lightning Bolt, that sameness is visceral and incessantly mind boggingly fast so it kind of negates would could become tired. The one song they announced as new didn't sound any different. I'm pretty sure I had an out-of-body experience during "Snake Assassin". I know for a fact that I was doing some arhythmic jerky thing with my leg, neck and arms. People were going f'n nuts. I loved it. I kept seeing people think they had a second to rest, complete with a look of relief on their faces, but LB just rammed it down their throats 3 seconds later.

Anywho, the ladyfriend and I both left feeling tired but feeling much less tense. Lightning Bolt are great source of catharsis.

I recommend them.

Death From Above 1979 is like Lightning Bolt if they wrote pop songs.

Yeah, that's why I said package. No other similarities were implied.

More indie. Awry. What's the difference? I still don't get all the love for Lightning Bolt.

And since you wanna be that way, make it 20X. :ass:

Well pu... HEY! ;)

As for my LB > DFA sentiment, it's the rawness. My persona is often way too nice for its own good, and Wonderful Rainbow helps bring me back into balance bringing out the psycho/violent/no-control side (normally in the form of an evil grin or just jumping around my apartment). It's the sort of stuff I lose myself in. That's why Wonderful Rainbow is my favorite heavy non-Maynard/non-Trail of Dead album I've heard in the last 3 years. I like what DFA I've heard, but it doesn't have the same effect for me.

Isn't one of the DFA guys dating Kelly Osbourne?

Anyway.

The thing about ear plugs is that yah they protect your ears, but they completely detract from my enjoyment of the show. I saw the USAISAMONSTER last week from right in front of the speakers, and found it to sound dull. I moved back for the last song, took out the ear plugs and finally got it. That shit's got to be loud.
