I bought a few books for my upcoming trip - a couple of those O'Brien Aubrey novels (master and commander) and a Saul Bellow novel.

What do you think of this one? I've got it on my list of books to check out. I don't know anything about it except someone referenced it in an interview I was reading a while back and it sounded good.

I found an annotated translation of it but neglected to buy it and now I can't find that same one again. Which version do you have?

You do know that this is allegedly the inspiration for "Sympathy for the Devil"?

I am reading:
They Marched into Sunlight by David Maraniss
The Making of the President 1964 (the blueprint for all campaign books)
Bad Bet on the Bayou: The Rise of Gambling in Louisiana and the Fall of Edwin W. Edwards (Corey, Tanner and Trevor, you should all pick this up)
A Monk Swimming by Malachy McCourt

yeah, that was one of the reasons i wanted to check it out originally. my guess is that Marianne Faithfull read it and tried to explain it to Mick, who grasped very loosely the idea and ran with it.

Have you started yet? Have you read any other Bellow?

I've only read Augie and I'm simultaneously mesmerized and frustrated by his style...

A friend of mine has recommend The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy to me. I'm not too sure that I'm to the challenge or even interested in the challenge. But, sure seems to be the original Infinite Jest, etc.

I think Seize The Day is the best place to start with Bellow.

Finished one of Susan Anderson's (...Abandonment to Healing), and I've got Black Swan in the back pack.

Also have one from The Way to Vibrant Health by Alexander Lowen, whom I've forgotten how much I liked.

Yeah, it was in a Marianne Faithful article that I heard about it. She said she had recommended it to Mick and that he then wrote the song.

Nothing new (re-reading a whole lot of classical texts though) but I'm trying to find a copy of Goethe's 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' with little success.

I believe my answer is the same as is it would have been last May, as it seems to be taking forever for me to finish this book, but I really am almost finished: The Confusion by Neal Stephenson.

On deck: Laurell K. Hamilton's new one. I need a break from all that fancy prozac...erm...prosaic language.
