Child abuse and molestation is a horribly growing and pervasive problem in our society and most people have no idea the extent of the problem. I've known many social workers and when you look at the number of child welfare workers in a given area and add up their case loads and realize that these are only the cases where the state has deemed it necessary to come in and taken custody of the children, which doesn't take into account most middle class and above families where the problems are more easily covered up, the sheer number of children affected is staggering.

People are too embarassed or everly emotional to talk about the problem openly, so we just sweep it aside and let our nation's children be beaten and fucked, mostly by family members and then rail about how we need to get tough on crime when these same kids are the ones who grow up to be criminals while punishments for family members who molest their children are often little more than a slap on the wrist, if they get prosecuted at all.

It's a fuckin' nightmare that pretty much no one addresses and thus doesn't look like it's about to get any better any time soon. OK...it's a topic I can rail about forever, so I'll just shut up now.

Fuckin' Great! I met my parents tonight for dinner. When leaving their neighborhood they saw police blocking out entrances to their area. The police had been looking for a missing 5 year old girl, reportedly abducted and possibly abused.

the question is: are there enough sex offendees?

CPS reports are yet another drag to my job. Mostly because we are required by law to file them when necessary, if not we can get charged with felony negligence. However, when they are filed, they are just that. Filed. You never hear or receive follow up on it for these kids. Maybe this is just the state of CA but I fear it's the same everywhere. It's like, "thanks for the notification--I'll put that right in their file. It'll be page 300 of (enter large number here)". It's hard to find the point in it. I am certainly not educated enough to help counsel the kids that have experienced molestation/abuse/trauma. But someone needs to be helping them out, you know?

I hope you're right, but I think much of human behavior is a product of our environment, and right now our environment is sexualizing children in a way that was completely unacceptable even 20 years ago. Our ideal of sexual beauty appears to be a 14 year old girl. Models and actresses wear size 0 or size 1 clothes, their bodies prepubescent except for the silicone mammaries pointing out from their chests. Both male and female adults are not allowed to have body hair. Take a read of that Obner Natalie Portman thread - that girl 100% looks like she's 13 years old and yet that is apparently what "men" want in a woman.

And check out the news. Every time there's a story on some dickhead getting nabbed for kiddie porn, what is the accompanying graphic? That's right - images of kiddie porn. We're in the process of mainstreaming this shit. And I tell ya, it's only gonna get worse.

I do think the sexualizing of children is an interesting topic, but I don't think we can really say that the current climate in unprecedented. 20 years ago, OK. But, go back further and you have established men in their 30s picking out 13 and 14 year old brides as a regular matter of course, so I don't really think it is entirely something new. Is it really getting worse in this day and age is difficult to gauge since so little reliable data on such things exists and is harder and harder to find as you go back in time.

Regardless, to me the importance is not whether or not the problem is getting worse now, but that the problem exists to the extent it does, regardless.



Oh...I also like the comment on how nom it is turning to a problem for men as well. I've always found it horrifying that once society started realizing how wrongly we treat women in regards to sexuality, instead of fixing that, we seem to have just decided to treat men same shitty way more and more.
