Love, Actually

It's not your typical Hugh Grant movie.
Fuckin' great, really.

Bjork: The Inner or Deep Part of an Animal or Plant Structure (this it the making of "Medulla") I just watched this today. Pretty cool stuff.

Hotel Rwanda
Bloodsucking Freaks
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Tell Me
Life Aquatic (I just got this today. I've heard so many bad things about this, but I love Bill Murrary and Wes Anderson)

We need a similarities engine for movies.

If you liked Equilibrium, then you'd probably like Brotherhood of the Wolf.

If you liked Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, you'd probably like Hero.

If you liked Toy Story/Toy Story 2/Finding Nemo, you'd probably like Incredibles.

If you liked Eating Raoul/Tool videos, you'd probably like Little Otik.

&c.

And of course, it goes without saying:

If you hated one, you'd probably hate the other.

I liked Brotherhood Of The Wolf so much I bought the 3 disc dvd. Have you seen Haute Tension? It's great up until the retarded plot twist near the end.

I have to watch Primer again.

I'll recommend Infernal Affairs and The Twilight Samurai. Old Boy is great too but it's not available on Netflix yet. You should buy it.

Brother's Keeper, Devils Playground, and Fog of War are 3 very thought provoking documentaries I would recommend.

Good movies

The Incredibles
In America

If you haven't seen it, The Harder They Come is really great and would be great even without the tremendous soundtrack. Bonus disc of interviews was well worth watching.

Amandla! is an excellent documentary on the role musicians played in overturning Apartheid in South Africa

I got into a big blaxploitation kick last year and would highly recommend:

Superfly
Shaft (original version)
Foxy Brown
Coffey
Cleopatra Jones
Dolemite

They're not high art, but oh so entertaining.

Actually, that's surprisingly close to ours.

Yeah, we watched (and regretted) Punisher, too.

Any standouts in there that you would recommend?

Oooh...tell me more, what's on it? Please tell me the theatrical version is on it somewhere.

I'm going to watch every Mark Dacascos film ever.

Any standouts in there that you would recommend?

besides my earlier post:

Croupier
Being There
Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl (tho it's really depressing)
Audition
Throne Of Blood
Yojimbo
All The Real Girls
Grave Of The Fireflies (another really depressing one and it's anime)

Oooh...tell me more, what's on it? Please tell me the theatrical version is on it somewhere.

I'm going to watch every Mark Dacascos film ever.

no theatrical version...it's got deleted scenes, making of, a documentary and something about the legend of the beast and a few other things.

I didn't see Haute Tension... I take it you recommend it?

I thought Brotherhood made about the worst use of slomo possible and that the monster was superweak. Was I wrong?

Haute Tension is kind of a slasher movie but it looks really good and I recommend it up until the cops show up at the gas station near the end.

I thought the monster in Brotherhood was pretty awesome. I didn't really notice the slo-mo that much, but it's better than seeing Van Damme hit someone once from every concievable angle.

Some random movies I've thought of:

Being There. The best, least-known late '70s film, and Peter Sellers' last hurrah.

Manny & Lo - nice little pregnant girl on the run movie with sister and kidnapping.

Together (Moodysson) - A great movie about a commune of hippies in Sweden circa 1976.

Yes on the first (I thought the opening fight-in-the-rain sequence was gorgeous), and no on the second. But I think the intention was that the monster was intended to be superweak. But I also think the opening scene (the truly truly first one, before even the fight-scene in the rain) belied that -- it made me think that the monster was more truly monstrous than it ended up being. So yeah, that was pretty lame. But worst ever (or even in the last several years -- which is saying a lot, because the movie's kind of already several years old), I think not.

I like all the City of God love being thrown around...

Though no one's said "The Sword of Doom" yet - my favorite recent pickup (on the serious side) as opposed to Karate Bullfighter (on the not-as-serious side)...

I'm in limbo w/3 films I want to see, but am not in the mood for (Assasination of Richard Nixon, Maria Full Of Grace, Running Out of Time)...

And I've soooooo bought Battlefield Baseball, but Amazon hasn't shipped it yet (though it's avail. on Netflix already - WTF??)
