Being college students at UT-Austin, most of these kids are already into college rock.

Au contrair, I am driving away from Austin to help one of my old friends TA a Field Biology class out of my undergraduate alma mater, Abilene Christian University. Although there may be a few freaks, druggies, and outliers - like I was when I was there - I expect that there will be a few from the Jars of Clay crowd, and a few from the CMT crowd. I plan to shock and awe them, and corrupt their pure little Christian hearts. Trying to decide if I will burn all of my bridges with my friend Tom if I bring a hip flask, some cigarettes, and a secret stash of Sticky Icky. Such things are strictly prohibited amongst that crowd, which is why I feel I must . . .

One of my favorite things in life is having people wonder how a person this "addled" can be so damn good at what he does. You should get some joy out of this feeling too.

Yeah, when I was an undergraduate there at ACU I was involved in everything from on-campus fornication to off-campus drug raids. I never landed in the Dean's office, but was instead one of the Dean's favorite pets, featured in fundraising videos as a model student, even. Graduated with two diplomas, Honors program degree, cum laude.

I am but a pale shade of what I used to be, but you would have liked my most mongerous self, the guy who showed up for a philosophy final tripping balls and got the highest grade in the class.

I used to be the model for the work hard play hard be successful and have fun too ethic, but as I succeeded and my friends crashed and burned into their varied addictions, a lot of the savor went out of it for me.

So I moved from ultraconservative Texas to ultraliberal Oregon and cleaned up my act when I started my Master's. Go figure.

I have cleaned the act upa bit, but when your neighbor/landlord is the biggest monger in the state, it is hard to stay in line. Hence, my massive hangover this morning.
