I'm listening to Histoire de Melody Nelson and i'm digging it alot. Like a perverse white Isaac Hayes, of Jarvis Cocker without as much bile. It's a little hard to try to remember what little french I know, but I get the gist of his songs.

Anyone recommend anything else by him? His discography is massive

I don't know much French either but I can take a guess at what 'Requiem Pour Un Cunt' is about.

I only have compilations as his discography is very patchy. Some great, some awful and usually the two are mixed in with one an other. 'Historie de Melody Nelson' is generally regarded as his best complete work.

What I would recommend would be the book that came out about Serge Gainsbourg a few years back - 'Fistful of Gitanes'.

I found it to be quite a poignant read.

being the resident Serge expert. I will tell you that this is basically my favorite album of all time. ever. by anyone. It's fucking genius. the lyrics are great too. After this, I suggest Comic Strip which includes Bonnie and Clyde, which is my favorite single, sung with Brigitte Bardot...

I love when Dylan Moran does his Frenchie "Smoking a Galloise, wrapped in a Gitane..."

and yes, there is a lot of crap too. He was prolific. Lemon Incest, his group with his daughter, is awful.

This kicks ass. I like it a little better than Histoire de Melody Nelson. I ordered Comic Strip recently and my copy was completely blank -- no data at all on it. Had to send it back. I'll get around to reordering it sometime soon.

Can anyone fill me in on his reggae albums. Are they any good? I'm a bit curious about them but imagine I'd either love them or hate them.

Isn't this dude generally regarded as one of the all time mongers (in a psycho/sicko/sexual way)?

or is it just that he's French?

Well he did his reggae albums with Sly & Robbie didn't he? At least you'd expect the bass and drums to be good.

Yeah that's true. The reviews I've read suggest he realized the limitations of his voice and didn't try to get overly rasta with it too.

It's a reggae record, and as mentioned in the thread features Sly & robbie & others in a fantastic band. I don't listen to it as much as other records, but I'm happy to own it. It's kind of "good cheesy" a/la Giorgio Moroder.
