damn those irivers are expensive. color screen is cool. i could care less about it's FM tuner

Huh? The 40 GB iRiver seems to cost the same as the 40 GB iPod.

Not that I'm a fan of the new iRivers. The older version's slightly smaller size is more appealing to me than a color screen.

If you ripped a lot of your music as AAC files, you might want to get something that can play them. iRiver plays MP3, OGG, and WMA. No AAC.

I also own a Creative Zen, actually the same exact one as Dov, and it works perfectly. I've had it since August and I haven't had any trouble. Compared to the iPod it's a lot cheaper and you get more space. I own a 30 GB and it cost me less than a 10 GB iPod would've cost me.

This seems like kind of a biased statement from PC users. These ipods originally were just for Macs and as far as I know are still the only option for us Mac users.

My iRiver works on a Mac. It's a mass storage device so you just plug it into USB and it shows up like an extra hard drive. Couldn't be easier.

I stand corrected, I thought it was just for PCs. Why the hell don't they market it more for Mac users then? I think it would be a given to promote somthing as an alternative.

Mine's also just a mass storage device which shows up as an extra hard drive. Isn't Zen the same. I don't know why there would be any Mac compatibility issues for alot of these. The storage device is the way to go....no software issues which seems to be the big complaint from most IPOD users.

This reminds me of a couple of years ago when I got one of those cd players that played MP3s on CD-Rs. It was a Rio that allowed you to upgrade the firmware. That fucking thing lasted about a month before the problems started, so I got a Sony that did the same thing but didn't require any software updates and have never had an issue.

I would have to agree with your earlier point then, if there are alternatives then I don't see why more people don't abandon the ipod for easier, less tempermental devices. To be fair though, when I first started looking at MP3 players a couple of years ago they were strictly for PCs, that I know. They basically did not give a tin shit about the Mac user until the ipod came out and changed everything. So part of me has a certain loyalty to the product because those fucking PC assholes didn't care about us because our base is so terribly small it's just not worth it.

crap and I just ordered an ipod....

Don't worry about it, seriously. Treat it like what it is - a very small computer. Meaning, don't slam it around, be gentle with it. It's a tiny hard drive with tiny hard drive parts that are really pretty fragile. Don't keep it in your car when it's hot, etc. - don't do anything you wouldn't do with a computer.

I seem to reformat mine pretty regularly - every month or so it seems (not on a schedule) - and I have a completely unsubstantiated belief that this will keep problems from happening. Call it a superstition. I have had it going on six months soon and I haven't had a single problem with it, so I'll stick with my ritual.

I got tired of waiting to have enough dough to afford an iPod (or any other brand), so I just sent my boss an e-mail requesting this:

Hey does that 100GB thing have a decent seek time? My ipod can shuffle without spending time between tracks, I had a RIO that took 3-4 seconds to find the next track.

my wife and i both own ipods, and we've never had any problems.

i update mine almost daily on my pc at home, then take it to work and plug it in to listen to music on my mac. i also listen to it in the car every day.

i'd be sad without it :(

I got my 60GB iPod photo a few months ago. Since then, it hasn't left my side. It's my lifeline. I also update it almost daily and play it at home, in the car and at work. I even listened to it mowing the lawn today. Rocking some Mars Volta made that task a little less painful.
