See, now we are talking. If you like drinking, this is a town for you.

Oh, and no one said you HAVE to like Athens. I know a lot of people with lobotomies that are indifferent to it ;)

We just holla hood every chance we get.

And the Benny reference was because he almost ripped some dude's head off his shoulders the other night for insulting the South.

(Gently) describe what the hell went wrong last time. Was it a fratboy encounter? I'll lay money on it being the wrong bar someone took you into. There's some straightup Bullshit bars there, where it's packed to the rafters with meatheads and bottle blondes, crappy music blaring, and fights breaking out every night. But there are bad bars everywhere. There are also some killer bars there, and great live music, great small eateries, great scenery, etc. Plus if you can sit outside on the corner of College and E. Clayton street for 30 minutes and not fall in love twice, I'll eat my hat.

Well, we not afraid to launch nuclear weapons at the slightest provocation.

pretty much. like i said, it reminded me of chapel hill where people go on and on about this great music scene but that's not really where the soul of the town is, it's in SUVs and frat boys completely removed from anything but the umbilical cord of daddy's coal mining company or something. i didn't see a lot of places where one could have a good time without finding out their particular niche spots, whereas one of the things that i really value about a place are the spots where you can find a comfortable anonymity. sure the girls are hotter'n hell.

Look at next year's football schedule and find a game to come down. You may hate the frat shit, but then again, so do we. We'll take you to Taco Stand and then to The Roadhouse. I'm not anonymous there, but I do operate with complete immunity.

in all honesty, is this a southern thing? because i've had that happen here too, where we tell people that we're from RI/OH and just generally points north and we'd like to head back that direction (in a totally normal tone) and i've had a few virginians/north carolinians flip out like i whipped out a twenty and pissed on it.

I suppose part of my undying love for it is rooted in the fact that I have yet to see a college town come anywhere close to it, by any measure. I've been through Chappel Hill, I've seen Austin. All very nice, but no Athens. Yes, there are SUV's. Yes, lots of kids these days are chock-full of daddy's money. Boo Hoo. It sucks, but if that's the measure of a town's worthiness, you're headed to India my friend.

That town has some truly great little areas to live, some good bike riding, excellent food, reasonable prices, killer college football events, the obligatory jaw-dropping tail, and continues to produce more good bands than a city that size should, by all rights. That part has a lot to do with the fact that any band, no matter how abysmally shitty, can get not just 1 gig, but Regular gigs, somewhere, since there are 8,000 places to play.

I could turn you.

I'm not sure. I just like to fuck with people ;)

But I mean, i've been to those place you are talking about and would be much happier in VA or NC than say, Ohio.

This may be equal parts "southern rancor" and "chase's tone." You must admit that you have a penchant for finding / pressing softspots.

sure, i'll buy that, but is it so inconceivable that someone who had lived in all four mention states would prefer the first two? i just don't understand what makes someone say "this is perfect, you are not expressing a preference but are simply wrong". granted these conversations only happen when drinking because that's really the only kind of conversations i have with people.

Fuck DC.

You should spend all afternoon and evening on the Baltimore's famous "Block."
