Psyche - not the Fall album.

I'm curious what the Obner consensus will be on this. Bend Sinister are a Vancouver band that just released their debut album Through The Broken City, and I'm really surprised at how good it is. Their sound is hard to describe, sorta like the New Pornographers gone prog; the songs tend to twist and turn but are always highly melodic. Cool stuff.

The title track "Through The Broken City" sounds to me like something a lot of people here will thoroughly dig. Click on this link to the Bend Sinister website and give a listen. There's 3 songs from album.

These guys sound like what it would sound like if the Mars Volta hung out with Spock's Beard.

I'm not sure if that's good or bad yet.

Or Medieval heraldic symbol.

Not really doing much for me, but since I managed to get through all three songs with no problem, it's considerably better than Arcade Fire.

Hmmm. That's enough description for me to want to never hear it.

Yeh, if I'd read that description I would've stayed away as well. In fact, generally the word prog has me running for the hills with my ears covered - and even though there's nothing remotely mongerous about this band, something's going on in "Through The Broken City" that I like. A lot.

It's not bad, certainly, but I just can't say that I need something so similar in sound and feel to the Mars Volta (minus the Santana-esque aspects.) I only need so much of that in my collection - as much as I like MV, I only listen to it when I'm in a specific mood. However, had I never heard MV, I'd probably really like Bend Sinister.

I had to shut it off after about a minute. But I'm not in the mood for shrill noise right now, so I'll give it another chance later.

Jeez, mang, the intro doesn't end until about 1:30 into it.

It wasn't because it was bad, or anything like that. I'm having some anxiety issues today and the opening of that song got on my nerves.

I promise I'll give it another chance.
