He's the rapping protege of gay country superstars Big & Rich. Anyhoo, I'm like 99.99% sure he's a guy I was acquaintances with about 7-8 years ago. Huh...that's weird.

I was flippin channels the other day and saw this on CMT, and was like "did CMT change formats or is this really a black rappin' country artist." I even thought my tv might was screwed up and on the wrong channel.

I saw dude in EW the other day while wasting time at Barnes. He looks S grade. But then again, it's mainstream country...

They made an interesting point that in my experience (however limited) is true: That once the band stops playing at those giant honky-tonk clubs, they play contemporary rap...so it's not THAT much of a stretch.

Maybe timmyjoe42 knows..wasn't he bumpin Big & Rich or Toby Keith or something the other week?

Are you surprised though Stu? Its the goddamn Nashville music scene. The A&R departments of the major labels (which, and y'all can correct me if i'm wrong, have their largest, non LA, NYC offices in Nashville) in Nashville are are like Stevie Wonder reading an eye chart in their assesment of talent.

What they do really well in Nashville is calculate shit that will make monet. Country music is pro at selling the country-fied version of whatever flavor the month is selling on the pop charts.

Off the subject but similiar geography: What pop/rock/indie artists still go to Nashville to cut records?

The forthcoming Frank Black record was done in Tenn. with a cast of Stax/Volt alums like Cropper and cronies. Thats awesome.

See, these Nasville studio-hack gemius session players are in Nashville in some of the nicest studios in the world--and i know they are bored I guess my point is that id like to see someone do what Dylan did in the mid 60's--go to Nashville and use the
cigar Store Indian/genius session players to make a rekkid.

Kurtz, you're right. They target the lowest common denominator. I know first hand, because I work w/in the industry.

...Trail of Dead, Yo La Tengo, Trey Anastasio, Jack White, Neil Young are names I can think of off the top of my head that have recorded in Nashville as of late.

I think I will refer to them from this moment forward as Frankie Goes to Dollywood.

I'd get pay per view to see him go against Li'l Jon associate Pastor Troy, but other than that I'm ambivalent.

Dammit LooG, there's something else from that EW issue that I wanted to mention to you but I'll be damned if I can remember now what it is.

I though you might catch that. We actually don't have Cowboy Troy. He's booked in house w/ mgmt., but we do have about 4 of the Muzik Mafia associated acts on our roster. Jon Nicholson is pretty damn good though. He's not country. More of a Madison, WI-bred blue-eyed soul w/ a Rhodes piano and Gibson SG. Great live show and tight band. I recommend anyone check him out if he's in your town. Not indie, just good music.

When I saw the name and picture I thought of the cowboy who used to drop by Pee Wee's Playhouse. I guess this isn't the same guy?

np: Joao Gilberto "the Legendary Joao Gilberto"

anyway, muzik mafia is kinda bullshit musically, but it's kind of something fresh in the otherwise dull mainstream country scene that consists of like 2-3 respectable artists.
