Is this any good?

I have very low expectations for nu metal but I've been surprised before.

I've always thought of them as more metal than nu. I'll let you know what I think after I've heard the whole thing. I was just curious if anyone already had it.

I like it....it's short though....

which may be a good thing, cause there first two records had sveral real good to great songs, and half filler....

seems that they went with less filler this time..... tastes great!

To me, it's just more of the same. Same choppy/chunky rhythms, same screamed vocals- if you don't like part of a song, just wait a few seconds until it changes for the 43rd time. I think they really need to progress a little.

Just listen to Toxicity again and save your money. IMHO, of course.

Metacritic rating = 90 (six reviews)

Will get this eventually. Liked Toxicity enough, but it took a while to sink in.

I went to Metacritic, and I agree with some of what this fellow said, especially the part about the growth.

Gnarles gave it a6:
"Mezmerize contains all of the things we love about System Of A Down, but somehow the album just doesn't impress as it should. In fact, it's not even as good as Steal This Album, which was nothing but "throwaways". A significant problem is the sound, which is weirdly hollow and pro-tooled for a Rick Rubin production; the guitars are mixed way too high and the drums too low. It just lacks "bang". Another nag is that Daron Malakian takes up a lot more lead vocals on this outing, and he doesn't have a very compelling voice, to put it as nicely as possible. Finally, for this being only the first official System album in 4 years, it shows alarmingly little growth, instead relying on the same old System tricks, which were once dazzling but are now too familiar to be totally effective. There are great moments on Mezmerize, and few bands these days can produce the same thrill as a System song that truly coalesces in all the right ways. But here's hoping that this fall's sequel album, Hyponotize, thrillingly completes a story with a mildly uninspired beginning."

This band is interesting. I mean I don't like them at all, yet when there on T.V. or something, I can't seem to turn the channel. I just think it's crazy that they're as main stream as they are.

Yeah, I've always thought they were just as fascinating as they are irritating.

I can't say I like them them, but they are uniquely puzzling freaks.

what's hilarious is all the armenian people that love them. I remember hearing about these guys a long time ago at Armenian Camp (yes, one of the more interesting stops of my childhood) and then watching them ride a couple of singles to notoriety...crazy. I remember driving around with my mom one day (she's where the armenian ethnicity comes from in my blood) and telling her that I had found some cool Armenian music and then popping in Sugar and just blasting it. Good times.

I've always liked SOAD. I think their first two albums are grand.
Then again i like early Korn, the Deftones, Tool and Slayer. I remember buying the first album based on a review in AP magazine right before they switched their content to it's current format. They gave it 5 out of 5. I would play the album in my car for my friends and none of them could stand it. They hated everything i played them anyways. Sure enough 6 months later they get their video on MTV and blow up and my friends magically began to like them. Strange.

I'll be picking this up tomorrow.

seriously. if it has anything, it has serious pulse and feel, and yeah, maybe their act is starting to get tired, but when it was new and raw it was pretty damn good.

i feel like their devolution is probably pretty similar to weezer- doing the same thing for too long and losing the edge. well, fuck, that's everybody/everything that sucks story.

I can tolerate deftones but I don't really have any urge to listen to them

Still with Atlantic. 3rd release, Blue-Sky Research, comes out August 16th. Info here. I guess "Poem" was enough for them to maintain the contract, and I'm glad. Been rootin' for these guys since 2000. I like Gift very much.

see, radio listeners might be impressed with this shit, but if you follow real metal, this album will sound fucking tired and full of cliche's.

yeah, it's tight playing, but totally meant for the MTV crowd. some of the vocals are fucking LAUGHABLE! i can see a sea of awkward, pissed off white kids dancing like clowns to this crap.

my recycle bin just ate it.

...and this album is too cartoonish for me overall, though the song Violent Pornography isn't bad.

Can't stand System of a Down. Even if they are hometown favourites around here, I think they're droning and make my ears bleed.

Actually heard a fair shake of this album yesterday while hanging out with my boy Tim; My initial opinion was that they owe some money to Mr. Bungle/Faith No More/Patton. That's not a bad thing, just kinda weird.

I'll probly borrow/rip this thing though; Pretty decent.
