I have
Image

I bought it in the early 90s. I've always liked it.

I never bought anything else. Can't even say that i've heard anything else.

Where should I go from here?

"Nowhere" should be your next purchase.

""Going Blank Again" next.

Both are their best albums IMO.

"Carnival Of Light" is also good.

if you can find their ep's [Fall, Ride, Twisterella, Play, Leave Them All Behind], they all feature some brilliant b-sides.

Modem, check out Amusement Parks On Fire as well. If you're into Ride, you'd dig them.

oh, and you can skip "Tarantula", but pick up "Waves" 'cause it features some excellent sessions tracks.

i realise i'm not in the thread title, but too bad...ride is one of my favorite all-time bands.

go out immediately and get yourself nowhere and going blank again and once you're finished obsessing with them, pick up the box set for some unrealeased goodies and a fantastic live set. also, pick up the nowhere forever ep as those b-sides are some of the best songs ride have done.

i stopped there. i didn't like carnival of light or tarantuala at all.

I liked these fine when they came out. They aren't as good as Nowhere or Going Blank Again and are a big departure from their original sound to more standard fare Brit Stadium rock. But for that style of music, they did a nice job. I haven't listened to them in years though so I don't know how they would stand up today. Maybe not so well.

Nowhere followed by Going Blank again was the right answer.

i just realised too that nowhere and going blank again have been re-issued with the b-sides of the period appended to the albums.

i need to upgrade mine now....

i agree. some really good songs that still sound good today [crown of creation, 1000 miles, natural grace, endless road]. this is the sound Idlewild are trying to accomplish now, and failing miserably at.

Just get 'Nowhere' and be done with it. I suppose 'Going Blank Again' is okay if you really need something else.

Hmmm, that's interesting. I think that's probably true. Ride, a band I really felt drawn to at the time, is for me one of those "one note" bands. Nowhere was the best presentation of that very fine note. If you are going to buy anything else make sure you have all of MBV or buy something by Slowdrive or Chapterhouse.

Modem, don't sleep on "Going Blank Again", trust me.

Get your fill of Nowehere, and then proceed to the brilliance that is GBA.

You are so wrong Steve, as you have the Boo Radleys, Swervedriver, Telescopes, Moose, Spiritualized, Pale Saints and stuff like Verve’s first album, not to mention...

There are some amazing things out there and they are all coming to a computer near you. I’m getting a brand new computer and going to be putting up some of my stuff that is hard to come by, stay tune.

As far as Ride is concerned: Smile, Nowhere and Going Blank Again have been played so much that I wonder if my CD’s are worn out? I also think the Today Forever EP is one of the best EP of the 90’s. I also liked Tarantula where everyone else seemed to not like that album but that was at the time of release and I wonder if it’s still true. It might have been propped up a bit because Carnival Of Light was a big disappointment for me. Saw Ride about 10 times in total, what a great band.

Has Chapterhouse’s Whirlpool held up because that album is sooo good but haven’t played it for years as well. I was so in love with their Mesmerise single that it might have been the best four songs they ever released.

np: Dodgers vs. Giants

Fair enough. Can't argue with Boo, Swervedriver, Spiritualized. The others I can't say I have listened to much aside from the Verve and I don't really care for their debut.

first impression:

listening to "seagull", I realize that I don't appreciate the wooshy-wooshy droning as much as I do the pure pop.

It's precisely the whooshy-whooshy droning that I like(d) about Ride and Nowhere in particular.

Jesus Jones is so much more stale than Chapterhouse, Ride, Slowdrive, MBV... had a shelf-life of three years tops.

So I knew that only a few would answer my question but really wanted to know what people think so I posted this elsewhere and it’s up to 32 responds so far:

Does Chapterhouse's 'Whirlpool' stand up today?

So I had a chance to listen to it and quite enjoyed it. I will post what I posted on the above link here but some of it makes no sense unless you read the above link:

So I finally had a chance to listen to it. Back in the day I happened to be a pretty big fan of the band, or the whole scene itself. I actually got to see them at the Whisky A Go Go on September 11, 1991. They were surprisingly good to great, which was interesting because I liked some of the other so-called shoegazer bands more.

Consequently I own all six UK EP’s including the U.S. promo only of ‘Falling Down’ and ‘We Are the Beautiful.’ So I broke out the ‘Pearl’ single and there are two versions on it one at 5:16 and the other (edit) at 3:16. Than when I put on the album that version is 4:56 long. I didn’t play these back to back so I didn’t notice too much difference outside the edit version.

So to answer my own question on does it sound dated and I would have to say yes it does. Regardless that was part of the charm and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did play it on headphones to get the full effect and was thinking that if my mind were altered I would totally be in love with their brand of psychedelic music. Not all the songs do work however but the majority of it was cool. I won’t be playing it again tomorrow but pretty happy that I broke it out tonight.

Meanwhile because of this thread I’m going to break out Blood Music and maybe even that extra remix album that came with it. I didn’t really like BM too much when it came out but because someone up post said that it sounds good today will give it a try.

i agree with quite a few of them over there at ilx. the drums are exactly what dates it. well, and some of the soft, dreamy vocals.

like i said...still entertaining, but doesn't hold up overall for me.

now, Adorable's debut on the other hand....
