Thoughts, please.

Any kind of place for a family with 2 young kids? Where is the best place to live to be close to: hospital/bars/shopping/transit, etc?

Cheap, but dirty. Not so much dirty, as filthy.

The surrounding counties (I'm in Anne Arundel) are much nicer, but much more expensive. Do you actually want to live in the city, or just nearby?

Baltimore does have a minor metro system, but not anything like DC. Easy to drive though.

Be careful house hunting, there are some very unpolite areas in the city, in all areas. There are some nooks and crannies that ain't so bad though.

What's on yer mind?

If we end up there, looking to live probably in a nice apartment/townhome/highrise with convenience and (reasonable) cleanliness. Probably wouldnt buy yet, unless we ended up in a different city.

Don't get me wrong. I love the city. It ain't purdy though.

I live about a half-hour south, so my points may be a little off versus someone who actually lives in the city. Vincent, maybe?

Baltimore is fully comprised of many neighborhoods. Where else can you live in a part of the city known as Pigtown?

Okay, I just found this: Average Home Sale Prices by Neighborhood.

I know you mentioned renting, but this will give you an idea of what to expect, sorta. Using this Baltimore City Neighborhood Map you can click on geographic area and it maps all the neighborhoods so you can see where in the city it is. For instance, Charles Village is North, Highlandtown is Southeast, Federal Hill is in the South, etc.

Where do you live now, and where else have you lived before or are familiar?

Live in Tulsa. Lived in Dallas and Austin prior. Would not mind paying 1500-1800/month for the right place, if renting (sounds crazy, I know).

Would like to provide a nice/safe place for my family while also providing convenience for me.

If you're looking to drop that much, I might try renting in one of the counties, assuming you don't mind a little commute into the city.

Is this a job transfer, or job search? Damn I'm being nosy.

Simple. Wouldn't take my order. After several minutes, with a line backing up.

i was expecting some cool story, like you were drunk and puked on their speker, or you hit it with the car, or took a leak on it, or threw mustard packets at the kid in the window because who the hell puts mustard on fries, or ...

When I lived in Baltimore, I lived in Fells Point, and it was dangerous, but i didn't go walking around much. I drove to work and it took 10 minutes. It was awesome. Then I moved north the next time i interned there and rented a room from a girl i worked with and her neighborhood was pretty nice, except there was nothing around except a chili's. whoopedy doo.

I'm not much help, except that the harbour is awesome. I now work with a couple that lived on the south side of the harbor and walked to work and said it was awesome.

No cool story, just no service for a hungry pilgrim headed back south where I belonged, afer being lost on the beltway for hours. Fuck Baltimore.

As luck would have it, this happened to me at a McDonald's by my house tonight. Way to use the force.

Lost on the Baltimore Beltway for hours? Where were you going? It's much easier than the Capital Beltway, unless you hit the wrong tunnels.

I would stay away from East Baltimore. That area north of the Shot Tower, around Fayette Street ain't no party. Seriously.

I don't mean to piss on your parade, but here's an excerpt from from City Paper's Best of Baltimore issue:

City Paper Wrote:
Best Place To Get Murdered: East Baltimore
Last year 271 people were murdered in Baltimore City. This year we are on pace for a similar count. If you stuck a pin in a city map for each murder victim, the east side would be so thoroughly covered you would barely be able to see it. Fifty-two of the 207 people killed so far this year have been killed in East Baltimore between 25th and Fayette streets. The area in which these murders took place extends from I-83 on the west and Edison highway on the east. It makes up just 3.55 of Baltimore City's 81 square miles, but a quarter of its homicides. The victims included two children, five women, and more than 40 African-American men. And the concentration is especially thick around one of Baltimore's most illustrious and wealthiest institutions, Johns Hopkins Medical.

Last year 270+ people were murdered in Baltimore City. According to this week's City Paper, 8 were killed last week for a total of 91 in 2005.

This isn't about Buffalo, it's about Baltimore.
