IS there some sort of thing or something that says that these motherfuckers cannot be out there at 7 in the morning every goddamn day? I'm about to kill everyone.

Been on this date. Fucking blows.

I never realized how long it takes to build a post office.

It's an effin garage. They worked on it from 7 in the morning to 7 at night yesterday. That even equals no nap time either. I hate life. and mexicans.

Grab a shovel and help them. You're gonna be up either way, and they'd only get done faster.

Actually the law is that they cannot start before 7, but 7 and after they are allowed to work. As loudly as they want.

A bit of knowledge I gleamed from having worked in a construction/development office for five friggin years.

And yes it's annoying as hell, we live in a bldg that wasn't 100% built out when we moved in, so many mornings we were awoken at 7 or 8 am to people banging on walls and such.

It used to be my job to sort out these motherfuckers; until I got fired anyway.

Here it's 8am - 6pm for 'noise producing works' during week days not that informations any good to you since you live in an entirely different country.

In my experience you don't want to fuck with scrap merchants (usually owned by gangsters with pitbulls that are trained to bite your balls off) but construction companies are pussies if you kick up a fuss.

Contact your local authorities Environmental Health officer and then make taunting phone calls to site foreman when his operation gets kiboshed.

Living downtown... I had to deal with night jackhammering for 3 weeks straight as they fixed the road outside our highrise. Started at 9p and went till 5a. I think I threw an egg down there one night... I honestly can't remember.

Ask Chicagoist: What's That Hammering?

Dear Ask:
There's a condo being built not far from my apartment. Everyone in my building keeps complaining to each other that they start construction so early in the morning (sometimes before 8am! and on weekends!) and continue well into the evening. Is there anything we can do? Anyone we can call? (311?) Are there any regulations about how early construction can start or how late it can go? It's really noisy and annoying to wake up at 8am on a Saturday morning to "BEEP BEEP BEEP" and noisy hammering.

Good morning Sleepyhead,
How rude! We hate when anything disrupts our Sunrise Mimosa.

To investigate, we made some calls to the City's Environmental Complaint Line(312.744.7672) and to 311. Here's the skinny:

Construction on residential (and most commercial) buildings can start at 8am and proceed, noisy as all get-out, until 9pm, 7 days a week. That’s right: just try to sing in church with that racket outside! And some commercial construction projects are eligible for 24-hour permits, as are certain City projects (like tearing up a runway, ahem).

If your hammering friends are actually working outside the 8am-9pm hours, it’s “911: Call The Police Time", as they like to say at 311. Have the construction site’s address (or street corner) when you call, so you don’t sound like an idiot.

311 said your Alderman doesn't really have much pull here, but we've heard a few high-drama stories of Alderpeople getting involved in these situations, with good results. (Who's my Alderman, you ask? Find out!)

Of course, Ask Chicagoist would like to remind Our Dear Readers that the individual members of the construction crew are not to blame; they are hard-workin’ folks like the rest of us. (In fact, Ask Chicagoist guesses they work significantly harder than most of us.) But: bust their boss! And for the crew, how about marching right over with a thermos of hot coffee? They must be exhausted.

Become a doctor and move to a neighborhood where construction's complete. Oh wait, you failed bio. Nevermind.

Edit: And good luck with that racism thing. Let me know how that works out for you.

Threaten to call immigration if they don't quit the job immediately.

Interesting, because on our projects in the burbs, they always start at 7 am and we had to produce a doc once to a neighbor that had complained about the noise.

Or my family just found a way around the law, which really seriously wouldn't surprise me.

I think the emphasis in the "Ask" column was "residential".

Public buildings, and probably a lot of commercial can hit it earlier.

I wish they'd do what they do in New York and run the highway crews 24-7. Pay the extra money to get these stupid three month projects done in a week and a half.

Which reminds me,

Anyone reading this who might ever consider staying at a Rock Resorts property, DON'T.

We stayed at Cheeca Lodge in the Keys a year and a half ago, and the bastards put us in a room near an area they were renovating. 7AM wake-up call was one of those ginormous Ingersoll compressors.

We got comped for it, but only after compaining vociferously, and calling the front desk every damned morning and holding the phone out the window. They ruined a vacation, and I don't often get to string five days off in a row.

Back when I worked as a concierge this was always a problem. The residents thought they owned the entire block and would call down to the lobby repeatedly whenever construction work began at an hour they deemed "unacceptable."

They'd actually ask me to go and "have a talk with them" and tell them they couldn't begin work until at least ten.

Yeah, right.

All my windows overlook Broadway, so in addition to the evening traffic and normal chaos, I always look foreward to the 2am garbage truck wake-up calls....

interesting that the broker never brought this up when i was looking for places.

Dig it! Is that the original guy? Looks like crap. I was always partial to the American Indian(who I believe was Puerto Rican) anyway.

Since when did Mark Clark become a basis for social acceptability?
