They aren't necessarily anti-God (such as XTC's "Dear God"), but protest more the adherence to dogma and squabbling over the same.

Aramageddon Days Are Here (Again) - the The
The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds

Other lines state something like:
God didn't put himself on that throne
God doesn't live in Israel or Rome

I forgot what an amazing song that is.
Any others?

A Perfect Circle "Judith"

You're such an inspiration for the ways
That I'll never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you
How the savior has abandoned you
Fuck your God
Your Lord and your Christ
He did this
Took all you had and
Left you this way
Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for you
He did it all for you

Oh so many many ways for me to show you
How your dogma has abandoned you
Pray to your Christ, to your god
Never taste of the fruit
Never stray, never break
Never---choke on a lie
Even though he's the one who did this to you
You never thought to question why

Not like you killed someone
It's Not like you drove a spiteful spear into his side
Talk to Jesus Christ
As if he knows the reasons why
He did it all for you
Did it all for you
He did it all for you..

I just want to say that my starting this thread, in no way, reflects any sort of anti-religion feelings on my part.

There are those who take comfort in speaking with God (including myself). And adherence to dogma is sometimes the only way one knows how to go about being "spiritual".

If you have found comfort/salvation in your chosen faith, I am joyous for you.

My qualm (as the qualm is with the song that I posted) is that some people place adherence to dogma over the message that is central to ALL religions -- AGAPE: or unconditional love of your fellow man. This includes respecting and celebrating differences, as well.

Cut through all the fire and brimstone, holy war nonsense, chosen people messages, and at the center of all the worlds' religions it the directive to love one another, and respect ALL of God's creation.

I think Matt Johnson nailed it in "Armagedon Days..." And man, was he pissed. (As I imagine he is now. As am I.)

I hadn't forgotten - it really is a great song, both lyrically and musically and still gets regular play on my MP3 player.

Soundgarden "Jesus Christ Pose"

And you stare at me
In your jesus christ pose
Arms held out
Like you’ve been carrying a load
And you swear to me
You don’t want to be my slave
But you’re staring at me
Like I need to be saved
In your jesus christ pose
Arms held out
In your jesus christ pose
Thorns and shroud
Like it’s the coming of the lord
And I swear to you
That I would never feed you pain
But you’re staring at me
Like I’m driving the nails
In your jesus christ pose
And you stare at me
In your jesus christ pose
Arms held out like it’s
The coming of the lord
And would it pay you more to walk on water
Than to wear a crown of thorns
It wouldn’t pain me more to bury you rich
Than to bury you poor
In your jesus christ pose

Maynard completely shows that he misses the whole point of Christian faith with those lyrics.

No.
I am not delusional.
And did not mean that in the literal sense.
Although you allow me to bring up another point – one about fundamentalism and how all Holy Books are written in metaphor. It gets dangerous when people take "The Word" at its word, word-for-word.

Example from my own background:
"You shall not take the calf and boil it in its mother's milk"
•Interpreted literally by fundamentalist Jews to mean not to eat beef and dairy together. When, in my (admittedly more liberal) interpretation it comes off as good, sound advice about not depleting resources, by drawing too much from a single source.

That is a relatively benign example. It's when you get into the words that are interpreted as "It's okay to kill people who don't think/look like you," that we humans get into trouble. And I mean Christians and Jews as well as Muslims. (Forgive me for not mentioning any other faiths, as I am ignorant of much history... that should be remedied, if I can help it.)

Don't mean to answer for PT, but "speaking" can mean just expressing yourself, or just simply letting things out that are troubling you and I can see having "someone" who is always there to listen being a comfort.

Also, for one who believes, an answer does not necessarily mean a thundering voice from the heavens. Answers, I suppose, can come in many forms.

i did not mean to suggest that you were dilusional. i came/come from a very conservative fundamentalist background (and 13 years in a fundamentalist school) so i am sure that some of my questions concerning this issue come across very sarcastic or bitter.

its only untill recently that i've been able to get to a point in my head were the indoctrination of my youth is no longer a controling force in my life.

Fela Kuti's Shuffering and Shmiling is about the role religions played in dividing the african population and in Fela's view preventing them from uniting in demand for better living conditions.

this might just be the reefer-addled musings of my tool fanatic metalhead friend, but wasn't maynard at one point a seminary student? lots of tool songs seem to contain some pretty anti-christian sentiments... they're like deep, man... and in like, crazy time signatures and shit.

John Lennon

God is a Concept by which
We measure our pain
I'll say it again
God is a Concept by which
We measure our pain
I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in Tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra
I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in Yoga
I don't believe in Kings
I don't believe in Elvis

I just believe in me...and that reality

The dream is over
What can I say?
The Dream is Over
Yesterday
I was the Dreamweaver
But now I'm reborn
I was the Walrus
But now I'm John
And so dear friends
You'll just have to carry on
The Dream is over

The line "Yoko and me" is conspicuous by its absence where that ellipsis is.
