Frog ringtone to oust Coldplay in UK music charts

LONDON (Reuters) - The "Crazy Frog" mobile phone ringtone -- loved and loathed in equal measure in Britain -- looks set to be number one in the music charts after it went on sale as a CD single, pipping a new release from top band Coldplay.

The Crazy Frog's "Axel F" is currently outselling Coldplay's "Speed Of Sound" by a four to one margin and is almost certain to be top when the charts are released on Sunday, music seller HMV said.

If it does make it to number one, it will be the first time a ringtone has achieved such a feat.

Television adverts plugging the tune feature an animated frog wearing a broad smile singing the distractingly catchy "ding ding dididing..."

Earlier this year, the Advertising Standards Authority received complaints from viewers who not only objected to the frog's visible genitalia but also the frequency of the TV spots.

In recent adverts, the frog's tiny penis has been censored even though the watchdog deemed in February it was acceptable.

"Music purists might not be too happy at the prospect of the Crazy Frog outselling Coldplay," said HMV's Gennaro Castaldo.

"Kids obviously find it cute and cool, but even students and office workers seem to be drawn to its rather kitsch, ironic appeal."

The US top 5 because turn about is fair game:

1. Hollaback Girl, Gwen Stefani
2. We Belong Together, Mariah Carey
3. Oh, Ciara Featuring Ludacris
4. Just A Lil Bit, 50 Cent
5. Hate It Or Love It, The Game Featuring 50 Cent

Those are all actually pretty decent songs, the best the top 5 has been in quite a while.

"Is the download statistics element incorporated in the British charts by now?"

This is a quote from ILX, not from me but totally cracked me up.

"Too bad the crazy frog didn't go head to head with Oasis and prevent them from the number one spot. Having a summer full of Liam starting a feud with an animated frog woulda been amusing. And hey, the frog seems to almost universally loathed so picking a feud with the frog might actually be a good thing."

yeah i read about this yesterday. hilarious. that frog is all kitsch.

as for the U.S. top 5, it says a lot about just how embarrasingly bad and predictable pop music is from this country. Some mumbling, talentless monkey has 2 tracks in the top 5. Yay.

Yeah, but at least those are basically his two best songs ever. And that Game track is probably one of the best singles this year, though not because of 50 Cent.

I can't find this frog track on slsk.

I know we were discussing frogs, but do we have to talk about monkeys?

(tries to envision anyone calling 50 Cent that to his face)

I agree that "hate it or love it" is one of the best mainstream singles of the year.

I don't know what 50 Cent has or hasn't done. I do know that I can't even count the # of black guys who naturally have bodies like that without juicing or ever lifting a weight in their life. I'm not going to open up that can of worms any further though.

Egadz, it's John Tesh. Only with some guy going "doop doo" over it.

Lamest phenomenon, ever. And I know a lot of the canon of bad English music.

I haven't heard it and never will hear it which gives you some idea of how far into a fantasy world of my own creation I've retreated.
