My obsessive tendencies have reared their ugly head. I have gone from having 0 Vinyl LP's in my home to having 150 in a month. I can see this rate decreasing slightly, but with so much good music so cheap I doubt the dropoff will be significant. Should I buy shelves or build them myself. Vinyl people please give me some advice. I guess I could by milk crates. People go that route, right?

Milk crates will work until you get a bunch more. Once you get a pretty large amount, it gets harder. There aren't a ton of pplaces making shelves for vinyl anymore, and they are usually expensive, although I have heard about some shelves from IKEA that are supposed to be the right size and fairly cheap. I made a record shelf not too long ago myself. You can see a picture in my album, which I just discovered recently.

I bought the Twilight Singers "She Loves You" on vinyl on a whim, cause i warmed up to the idea of vinyl for about 10 minutes. I don't even own a record player.

now, it just sits there. how geigh.

the IKEA ones are bigger, but not as cool looking.

if you do build, remember that records are pretty heavy.

Very true...the one I built originally only had supports at both ends, but as soon as I started loading it up, the bars started to sag, and I had to take it apart and put another verticle support in the middle. Them suckers weigh a lot.

That's the IKEA one, at a guess. Ugly but functional--you need those thick short shelves to make anything but solid wood hold up the weight. I'm just about at the end of the milk-crate as feasible storage point and have been pondering this dilemma myself.

Oh, not the same! Two IKEA options, depending on collection size, then. :)

Another vinyl question. I use the plastic sleeves without the flap at the top. Is this what everyone else is using?

what flap? like what saddle creek puts their LPs in? i use regular plastic sleeves on everything unless it's a single in a cardboard sleeve.

I use the standard plastic sleeves and I slide the vinyl in so that the open end of the sleeve is the end where the record spine sits.

This is what I have and it works great. I have about 800 albums loaded on the shelves and on the top, along with some magazines, and haven't seen any bowing yet, (three years later). Here's a pic...

When I use plastic sleeves I put the album in so that the jacket spine is at the opening of the sleeve, then slide the jacket into the shelf with the spine out, of course.

If you're buying a lot of used vinyl you should definitely invest in a record cleaning machine (RCM), which wet cleans the record and vacuums up the goop. You'll be amazed at the difference a clean record makes.

Most of the better alternatives have already been suggested. That said, I'd still like to suggest as an option:
