The in-dash stereo/cd player in my wife's van refuses to play burned CDs, which means I can't make mix CDs for our long family trips, which means lots of arguments and discontented kiddies, which means no fun for Max.

Can anyone out there recommend a cheap-yet-qual solution? I know zilch about car stereo equipment, and don't want to spend a crapload of cash. I just need something that works.

I can't recommended products or brands, but I would seriously consider something that plays MP3 CDs. More tunes, less disc-switching. If you have a cassette player in the factory unit, you can get a portable player and the adapter pretty cheap.

I've got a cheapie $100 Aiwa in my car, & it plays everything. Pay attention to the specs - anymore they list if the unit will play CDR's.

My stereo also has a little input hole right in the face, so if I end up with some sort of MP3 player I can hook it right in.

Also, this unit is a little over 4 years old...so you should have no problem finding something cheap with all the features you want. Make sure to buy when Best Buy or Circuit City has free installation.

What's cheap?

I've got an Alpine set-up. It's satellite ready, and plays through everything, scratches and all. I've bounced over railroad tracks with nary a skip.

How long are you going to own this van? If it's only an in-dash deck, shouldn't be more than a couple hundred.

Cheap = $100 ballpark.

My Aiwa has never skipped, either....& KC is Pothole Hall Of Fame.

i have a $120 kenwood stereo, and it plays burned cd's just fine. also- there's an output thru the back of stereo which i connected a wire so i can plug in my i-pod.

it is the best thing in the world.

now, i have to get some speakers cuz mine are really shitty.

Check eBay and see if anyone's upgrading their system and selling their old stuff.
