I respect your opinion Haq and these matters always boil down to personal preference anyway, no right or wrong. I have 'Down the River', played it quite a bit and thought there were a few sign-posts of indication that these guys have some potential, but nothing more IMHO. Just another one of those records that'll just sit and collect dust.
A couple of friends have pointed out that the 'new' record is a definite step-up so i picked it up and plan on crackin' the seal this weekend.
So we shall see . .

See, I think this is a little off-base. I am consistently impressed by Down The River... and not as much by the new one. But, thats what;s great about assholes...I mean, opinions ;)

i think i might like cold roses more than gold.

i sure as hell like it more than love is hell.

i wish "nuclear" and "starting to hurt" couldn't fallen off of demolition and THEN you woulda had yourself one helluva demolition. but those oysters spoiled the bunch, so i'd say i like cold roses more than demolition.

if he dropped maybe 2-3 songs from cold roses (more specifically "now that you're gone" "mockingbird" "blossom") then that'd put him at 15 songs and make it into a decent single disc. and then that single disc would rival strangers almanac.

but it wouldn't hold a candle to pneumonia and heartbreaker. (plus, both of those discs have nostalgia on their side for me)*

*faithless street and rock 'n' roll were not mentioned for a number of reasons.

VAIT A MINUTE! VAIT A MINUTE! VAIT A MINUTE!

Are you saying that nuclear and starting to hurt made Demolition WORSE?

Are you saying that Pnuemonia is better than Faithless Street?

Oh Jesus, apparently the v2.0 of Obner comes equipped with its very own gas leak.

I like those songs. There are a couple others on Demolition I like but overall think it's kinda boring.

Have to agree with this. I'm strongly considering burning my favorite 12-15 songs from Cold Roses making it the best overall Ryan Adams album to date.

Of course, I could do this with all of his other albums as well and make those great EPs...

Something elvis Fu and I have discussed:

How does Ryan get shit on for having no "editor" while Bob Pollard is hailed as genius every time he strums a guitar?

Or why do people lose their shit for bonus tracks, but get all pissed off b/c Ryan Adams doesn't have an editor. Just tell yourself the new Cold Roses comes with 5 "bonus tracks".

Pollard's songs are short. Adam's rants are long.

There is three tracks on two disc that reach the 5 minute mark. The rest are in 3-4 minute range. That's hardly "long".

I just hope I won't be telling myself that 29 & jacksonville are b-side discs to Cold Roses.

My point is, and I have neglected to make it:

Faster/Rollickin/Rockin Ryan Adams>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>unlistenable slow pretentious crooner bullshit.

I'm just and Excitable Boy. Excitable Boy they all said,

But it's true, what I said. Most of Heartbreaker is boring/borderline unlistenable, and there are numerous other examples.

The lyrics to Nuclear alone should have had people laughing in his face
"When I saw her, the Yankees lost to the Braves".

Adams and Pollard are like apples and oranges. Pollard's "genius" has been overstated and he would be the first one to tell you so as he takes another swig from his whiskey bottle, but I think the Adams comments at least from me, stem from pure frustration.

If he would just settle down a bit, stop releasing every song he writes and actually hone his craft he would be remarked with some of the best rock songwriters of all time. Instead he chooses quantity over quality and seems to operate on the "cream will rise" philosophy.

Loog- you're kind of the cap'n Pollard of the board, and he can monger with the best of them.

i think its a quiet album, and it sounds like your tastes point you to non-quiet listening. i think its introspective and cohesive. this rollicking ryan that you prefer is IMO better heard in songs like "to be young" (hb) "shakedown on 9th st" (hb) "gonna make you love me" (gold) "easy plateau" (cr, live version) and even strict rock tracks like "waiting to derail" (wt's stranger's almanac) "tilt-a-whirl" (pneumonia demo, bedhead). not so much "nuclear" (contrived) or "starting to hurt" (generic).

i don't think he does release everything he makes, which is kinda intriguing. the unreleased 3-cd bedhead series is case in point. good stuff in there.

Obviously, we are dealing witha guy who can be gar, and can be qual.

I think the main problem is that Heartbreaker was so overblown, and now people want him to live up to something that doesn't deserve the quality of something to be lived up to. Reference my Pitchfork letter.

And Katie, I like plenty of quiet stuff, just not the Adams brand.

When Adams does songs like "Blossom" I can't help but think sweet song, too bad I don't believe for a second that's he's sincere.

Yeah hold you up in the sun, darling, right, Jackson Browne.

I usually separate the artist's personality from his music and hate when reviewers connect them at the expense of the songs, but many of Adam's "sensitive" songs portray him as a thoughtful, reflective and caring human being, whereas most of his public babblings show he's a self-absorbed alcoholic bastard.

The two are not mutually exclusive, you know?

Spoon,
Ultimately I think that's where Adams true geniusness lies. What's the contrived and what's the real? I think he is way more intelligent than people are giving him credit for, and way more self aware than people are giving him credit for.
