So I worked 13.5 hrs yesterday... and Tuesday. And part way through my epic work shift yesterday I realized that--excuse the "too much information"--I have a bladder infection (very very painful and annoying). I told my boss's boss and she said I should go see a doctor today.

So I get some sleep and head to the drop-in clinic. I email work to let them know what's up... then I try calling... and end up having to leave a message, giving them my ETA.

I show up to work in the afternoon and what do I get? My boss has jumped in on something I was working on and totally FREAKS OUT on me about it. Like, she made me cry. I had to actually leave the room to calm down. Holy shit. Oh, then in a cold, unfeeling, official-sounding voice she went through the motions of apologizing to me in a totally un-convincing way. Then she went home.

Sorry to vent guys, but I'm still shaking. Fuck. I stated my case very calmly but I was soooooo ready to just fucking start swearing at her and tell her I quit. All the details are unimportant... I've tried so hard to sympathetic to her in the past but she's just being a total psycho.

That sucks, sorry to hear that. I hate inhuman bosses. My last one met about 5/7 DSM-IV characteristics for a personality disorder.

How worth it is the job? Is this a regular occurrence?

It has been a regular occurance. She realizes she's over-the-top with stress... she's actually quitting because of it. If it wasn't the case that she was leaving already I'd have probably quit.

Aww man Alex I'm soo sorry to hear that, I know those things suck and some bosses are just jackasses with no hearts.

As for me:

Don't even get me started.

Josh and Spade know about my issues right now, and I don't feel like repeating them. Let's just say I'm trying not to dwell on it, but if things don't improve I will go back to the family fold.

That does SUCK. With a capitol S-U-C-K, darlin.

My boss, while an open crazy person/idiot/rectionary/redneck fucktard who always wants us to have things "ON DISK" when he can't even send his own emails. At least he isn't here every day.

I've worked with my editor for almost five years now (4 as an indirect supervisor, the last 6 months as my direct) and he was my editor during my internship in '99 so we've kind of grown with each other's quirks.
We still aggravate each other once a week or so, but then we'll start talking about The Clash and everything's cool again.
I tell him he's ugly. He'll tell me to get a haircut. Then we go back to work.

Only job I ever had where the boss was truly intolerable was the summer after freshman year, working at the printer where my mom was a higher-up. Horrible, and to my mom's credit, she didn't shelter me from the wrath. Surviving that made me value the cool position I have now that much more.

hey, I have troubles with my boss (a grouchy 69 year old man, never married) too- and from what your boss just did, it sounds like it wasn't directed towards you at all. I know it doesn't help, but when people get VERY stressed like that they tend to snap- and leave...the fact that she left was a clue that it was her and not you, you know? I have seen my boss do it before too. IF you're lucky she'll feel bad and be extra nice.

oh, man, that does suck, and what Mlle says is very true-- it's not really about you or your performance, it's about your boss' lack of control or inability to manage. You're pretty young, right? Well, I've had my fair shared of dickhead bosses in this world, and yes, they've made me cry too. I'm not saying it's right, but after a while, you'll develop a thick skin to this sort of thing and it won't upset you as much. Besides, clearly your boss' boss likes you (and encouraged you to go to the dr.).

The only other thing I would suggest is start documenting these freak-outs. If it continues to be a problem, go to your boss' boss or someone else higher up that you can trust (I personally don't trust "HR departments").
