So I'm going on vacation friday, and I may very well want to spend a goodly amount of time in sandals. The problem is that all I have right now are some flip-flops (from J-Crew - by all means, laugh at me) that are horribly uncomfortable, and some birkenstocks which are nice enough looking but a bit cumbersome and, well, they're birkenstocks. This isn't 1996.

What I'd like are some comfortable sandals more in the flip-flop tradition (easily washable, light) but that will stay on my feet and not give me blisters. Furthermore, I tend to think the standard Tevas look fruity. I would like something that does not look fruity, a high bar for mens sandals.

Can you give me any direction?

I've been sporting Reefs since '99. I had the same pair for 5 years before having to buy another pair, and I wore them A LOT!

http://www.reef.com/

You can't go wrong with 'em. They're in the flip-flop variety so they're good for casual. I'm not into the leather dressy sandel thing these days.

And birkenstocks? Well, I think we all know that's what you don't want to wear. Hippy.

"Full-grain leather shapes a casual thong"

oooooh yeah.

Cotton - dammit, I KNEW it. But it's a cruise!

dude, they're sandals. they're gonna look fruity regardless. i usually wear a pair of basic black flip flops i picked up at the gap last year for $10 OR a pair of very basic teva knock offs from mec.

for a cruise keep in mind that you might be getting water on them - so leather would probably be a bad idea.

That's what I'm thinking. How would those Clarks hold up to water, Dana?

Would these interest you, Haq? http://www.keenfootwear.com/mens/antigua.html

If you're searching for a flip-flop with comfort, these are said to be the new Reebok Pumps. They might be a touch rugged for Harvard terrain, but they're durable and terribly comfortable.

Hip factor 5 out of 10.

Hmm, don't know, as they are on the less expensive side as far as Clarks go. I just know with the Clarks I've had, they've always been great about molding to the shape of my foot, making it a very comfortable walking shoe. And they're pretty well-made, so my gut feel is that it would work even if you got them wet. These might be a better option, but more of an investment.

Certainly a unique choice Moxie - I'd probably be too hesitant to wear them outside of the tropical vacation context to actually buy them, and there's almost no way i'll find them at DSW, but they look comfortable as hell.

For some reason the proliferation of straps irks me.
