You may have noticed this is an indie rock board, pretty much.

Yeah, pretty much.

Though I am playing Black Eyed Peas right now.
That mainstream enough for you?

The "indie rock is too bland" deal I always get from college kids (though they never actually spell it out this clearly):

a. It's not hiphop enough

b. Can't dance to it

c. Not loud/aggressive enough

(take your pick)

That's not the same as bland.

That's a matter of taste, not fact.

I don't think Andrew Bird is bland so much as textured.

Though I do agree with the people who say nothing has jumped out this year yet and bit them on the ass, at least not that I've heard.

You guys listen to an embarrassing amount of indie rock. Don't get me wrong, there are some great albums on these lists, but I can't find one single mainstream album on the whole collective of lists. And I know there isn't a lot to choose from in the mainstream, but Spoon, Andrew Bird, Decemberists, etc. = the most bland of all of indie rock. Give it up.

Hey hey, I listed Devils And Dust by Bruce Springsteen and as far as I know that is considered mainstream.

Don't get me wrong, I listen to a good amount of indie rock myself. Perhaps I came off as too harsh in my post. I do, however, have enough sense to avoid (in my opinion) the blandest of indie rock (such as the bands I listed), which can be as bad as a band such as Hoobastank (the blandest of mainstream rock.)

I don't have any set favorites list for this year, but I do really enjoy:

LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
M.I.A. - Arular
Quasimoto - Further Adventures of Lord Quas
Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth
Springsteen - Devils and Dust
Of Montreal - Sunlandic Twins
Dalek - Absense
The Perceptionists - Black Dialogue

When I actually get home and see the list of albums I've bought this year, I'm sure I'll think of others. This is just off the top of my head.

As you can see, I DO listen to "indie" music, but I just don't let myself get bogged down in the shitty releases for the sake of being "indie" as it seems some people do. (Examples: Hold Steady, Iron and Wine, Ryan Adams, etc.)

The above albums don't really jibe with the statement below. Aside from Springsteen and maybe Of Montreal, I wouldn't even want to hear, much less buy this shit. Get over yourself.

Ryan Adams hasn't released a record on an independent label since Heartbreaker, so how is he "indie for the sake of being indie". I can see that you are really into defining genre to create your preferences. It's a bit ironic that the three artists you picked on are three who truly couldn't give a damn if they are considered "indie or cool".

Welcome to the board, nice chip on your shoulder!!

I'm 103% positive I've never considered anything ever for the sake of its indieness.

In fact indieness is one of the goofiest concepts I can think of.

Well, sex in badger costumes is goofier, but only a little.

usually when I listen to a cd, I think how indie is this? than if it fails to score a 6 on my indie scale, I scoff at it and pull a really tight shirt over my too thin body frame.

The answers to all lifes questions can be found here...

...provided, of course it involves records being rated against one an other.

I'm not embarassed. Anyone else embarassed by their lists? Go ahead, raise your hand. Don't be embarassed...erm...shy.

You don't think NIN counts as mainstream?

i'm just so surprised my list is so alt-white-male. i mean, i've listened to elec-flavored stuff, and hip hop and female acts... maybe it's the altitude combined with a lotta root beer floats...

This thread is perfect evidence for why its futile for any of you to think you might be able to catch Phil Spoon in post count. Unable to put together a top ten list of his own this early, he still managed to make 11 of the 74 posts in this thread.
