So I bought the new Oasis last night. I go home to listen to it and it is skipping. I look at the record and everything appears to be Kosher. I am fairly certain it is my cheap ass $100 Sony record player, but I am not sure. I read somewhere to attach weight to the arm and that wil solve the problem. I have also heard this will wear out both my needle and turntable.

Help ME....araragh

well, is there a weight at the end of the tone arm? you can usually adjust how much weight is being placed on the stylus by turning it either clockwise or counterclockwise. cheap solution is to stick a dime or penny right on the stylus itself. and yeah more weight = more wear on the record and needle.

on most tables, their is a way to set the tracking force of the tonearm... there are gauges that help you set the correct amount so that you can play your records and yet not cause harm to the record or needle..

I suggest trying to increase tracking force little by little until the record plays...

But is this the only record you have problems with? Then Id say its the vinyl..

This is the first but it is brand new. I think maybe I should return it. I really haven't noticed this problem before. There is nothing noticeable on the record. Maybe I will return it just to be safe.

If you use the TT semi-regularly, and this is the only record that skips, blame the record. If you haven't used the TT latley, make sure it is on a level surface, then follow the mfr's set-up process to make sure the tracking force and anti-skate are set correctly for the cartridge being used. Please do NOT put a penny or a brick on top of the tone-arm.

This thing is cheap and thus I may not be able to do those things.

Check the anti-skate if you have one, and the counter-weight, as 12XU said.

I would steer away from coinage, they are surprisingly heavy. I generally use a bottle cap.

Also, check the record with your finger, sometimes there's crud in the groove that you can't see. You should be able to feel any imperfection.

Edit: And yeah, what Tentoze said.

yeah, the coin thing would be just to check if it's the record or not. it's not a long term solution.

I will try and use a dime for one play. That should not do any significant damage, right?

Is the skip always in the same spot, or is it a pervasive condition?

If it's in one spot, give that bad boy a good cleaning.

Of course in a more snide mood, I'd suggest turning the quality filter to "Permissive" from "Restrictive". It's a small toggle located under the platter. ;)

If you dont have a tracking force lever, knob etc, then I suppose you could put something on top of the cartridge but I dont advise it. I mean, basically what you are doing is increasing the wear and tear on both the record and the stylus.. just means you will have to replace them sooner than later.

If its new vinyl, and your player doesnt have the same troubles with other vinyl, then yes, I say, just return it

Unless it's one of these:

the tracking force and anti-skate can be checked and adjusted. But if the problem is only on the one new record, don't mess with anything but a trip back to where you bought it.

this happened with a lot of copies of the "me and giuliani down by the schoolyard" single a few years ago. for some reason, new copies had a lot of skips. i just used a swiffer and it then worked fine. since then, i clean all my records with swiffers.
