 Post subject: Somebody explain Stereo sound to me.

My sound card on the computer is listed as full duplex stereo. Is this just regular stereo? Or is there something I am missing?

Talking out of my ass, that just sounds like 2 independant channels to process sound, one for each side. How that differs from reg'lar ol' stereo I couldn't tell you, possibly not at all.

Full duplex (at least when referring to modems) means that information travels both directions simultaneously, instead of splitting the same bandwidth for incoming and outgoing signals. A telephone is full-duplex, a walkie talkie is half-duplex. Your sound card may be referring to the mic vs. the output - some people use their computers to communicate long-distance, and maybe early sound cards only allowed one line to operate at a time.

The example of this given in my old IT classes (which I dropped the fuck out of shortly afterwards) was the teacher and a student with 2 tennis balls. With simplex, it was A throws to B, then B throws back to A, just 1 ball involved. Full Duplex was your left arm throwing one while your right received the other, back and forth independantly, etc etc.
