Ladysmith Black Mambazo is a band not a woman. If my memory is right there isn't even a woman in the band. So basically, no.

No. If you ever get a chance to see them though, GO.

I didn't before, but now I will

Mam-BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAzo.

I saw them in concert about 20 years ago before Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel album made them better known. Exquisite. A busload of people on stage, too.

Apparently they're playing an outdoor concert at the Portland Zoo this summer. A friend of mine is really into them, so she's all excited to go. I've never seen them before.

It does make me think of the word "mazambas," so yes.

black mambazo makes me think it's a variation on "Alabama Black Snake"

RIYL?

Thick rich acapella harmony sung by about 10 black dudes with an incredible range. They're from South Africa I believe. If you've ever listened to Graceland, they're featured heavily on Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.

Nope. I've never bothered to research whether it was an actual band, just always assumed it was a Nell Carter lookalike.

Ladysmith was Joseph Shabalala's hometown. It was a farming town and there were black oxen on his family's farm. "Mambazo" is Zulu for "axe"

So the name means basically "Strong Ox from Ladysmith will cut you down."

It was a local boast for the group until Shabalala became a Christian and starting using the "axe" notion to mean "clearing a path for truth" more or less.

His brother was murdered in 1991 and his wife was murdered three years ago, so it's a wonder he still stays positive.
