Belle and Sebastian, I actually own all of their cds. I haven't got around to enjoying Elliot Smith enough to drop some coin on him. Nothing against the latter though, just enjoy the former much more.

Yeah, most Elliott Smith songs the sound. I'd have to with the scots.

Belle & Sebastian for the same reason I picked Beck over Radiohead. And why I like The Smiths, The Fall and Swans better than any emo-screamo or most "serious" rock.

I want my musical bleakness and despair and alienation and depression to have an Oscar Wilde-ish reflective knowingness behind it, not to just BE bleakness, despair, alienation and depression.

Not that I dislike Smith or anything because I don't.

elliott smith, hands down. i relate to his music more, and ithink it is just more affecting than B&S. while he was rather gloomy, a lot of his stuff gives me a lot of energy, and is actually pretty uplifting. B&S are great fun, and also a great band with fantastic songs, but they don't really hit me like elliott smith does

I really think that if you think Elliott Smith is all gloom and suicide, you've got most of your experience with him from The Royal Tenenabaums and Good Will Hunting. He's more angry than he is sad. I'd say that roughly 75% of his music, especially from "Either/Or" on is not really sad.

I just like Elliott Smith more, I don't dislike B&S, but I can't make it through an entire album of theirs, songs by themselves, ok.

Elliott Smith was a genuis songwriter imo.

You're right about this, but it's still guy's-fucked-up-and-singing-about-it music. Pretty good music, but that's still what it is.

This is easily, and by a wide margin the best thing you have ever posted, at least vis-a-vis my feelings on the subject.

"Your Cover's Blown" alone bests everything Smith has done.

This was confusing right after a post in which you referred to Elliott Smith, Mark E. Smith, and the Smiths. Augh! :)

But I'm with you. I like ES fine, but I'd rather he were kicked out of my collection than B&S (can I reverse this for From a Basement, which I thought was excellent, and Waitress, which I found a bit eh? No? Fair enough, Belle and Sebastian it is).

Elliott Smith's self-titled album, XO, and Either/Or are all individually worth more than the entire Belle & Sebastian catalogue.

With nearly 3900 posts, it was only a matter of time before I said something coherent.
