So here is my story...

My computer is working fine.....I have two drives. a CD drive and a DVD reader drive...

I buy a DVD Burning internal drive, to replace the dvd reader drive....

Best buy installs it....

I bring it home and my computer barely works.....Everything has slowed down to a near halt...Some programs don't open up no matter what....The DVD burning drive doesn't read and DVD i put in it to either watch or attempt to burn....

When I put a DVD into the other drive, it can rip it to my computer, but the waiting time is gonna be 6-7 hours....

something aint right...

i run Ad Aware....I do a disk clean up, i attempt a disk defrag, but i dont need it....I clear out a good 15 gigs worth of music to open up somoe space.....none of it works...

today I bring it to best buy's 'geek squad' to have e look at it...

they do a check and see that the burner is working properly, and it wouldnt cause the rest of my system to become like it has...

I explain to him that my computer was working fine when I brought it in to them, and the troubles all amassed upon hooking it up when i got home....

He then proceeds to politely explain how alot of people get work done, bring their computers home, and then bring em back a few days later complaining about a whole slew of new problems, and blaming it on them. He didnt directly say it applied to me, but of course, he was....

He says the only thing he can fathom is that my system had somehow become deeply infected with spyware and viruses, and that some are srt up to hibernate in your computer, only to activate when doing something radical to it like installing memory, or in my case, putting in a new drive...That can wake the sleeping viruses and that is what he says has happened..

i smelled alot of bullshit, but what was i to do? i had no other options. the computer is fucked as it is......i left it with him....part of it is covered under my warranty, but it is still 40 bux out of my pocket...and 25 more if i buy that spysweeper program.

He says they can run an intensive spyware / virus removal sweep of my enitre computer....using progams and cleaners that you cant get off the shelves and all this stuff......He then suggests i buy this program caslled spysweeper after its all said and done..

i cant use my computer the way it is, so i was basically at their mercy...

i dont buy his excuse, and think i may have been taken...

what kindo f recourse do i have after this is all over?

any of you tech heads, have any suggestions? can a virus really hibernate and awaken and ruin my computer after something like this?

sounds like bullshit to me, but why on earth you paid someone to install this thing for you is beyond me. the only tool that you need to install a dvd burner is a penis.

Hell, I've done it without even that. A screwdriver is a fine phallic substitute in this case.

i think that he might have gotten suspicious when he came to look at the computer and you had a goddamned cauldron boiling on the stove like a 10th grade wiccan.

yeah, the guys talking a lot of bullshit. i cant think of something they could have done to your computer that would make it run like that if they did everything by the book. which makes me wonder if someone was either a: an idiot, or b: taking a joyride around the internet. i would say, if its possible, get your money back, buy another drive, and install it yourself. ive never replaced i cd drive before (because ive never needed to), but it shouldnt be much harder than making note of where the cables go on the old drive and attaching them to the same places on the new drive. it shouldnt be that hard.

just download the trial version of spysweeper (latest version also contains latest definitions) - when new definitions+new versions come out..just uninstall it and then reinstall the software.

also, i would look into HiJack This software (free)

if you use internet explorer i would suggest getting their anti spyware program (free)

the geek squad are literally all high school drop outs that go to tech schools and barely pass the A+ exams.

my 2 year old niece knows more than they do.

your first mistake was not learning to install the drive yourself, but other than that, I think you are screwed

i tried to install it myself first.....the way the drives were packaged into the casing would have had me removing other parts of the computer including the fan and stuff....It was all created into real tight quarters and in no way as simple as other stuff i have installed over the years.

also, somebody told me once that if you have two different burnign programs on your computer, the softwares sometimes conflict and cause chaos...

well, its too lat enow..they are cleaning up my system and they can be sure that i am not leaving there withouth spending at east 30 minutes checking every od damn program on there to make sure it all works....

but to reitterate...installing the drive myself was not an option.

Out of curiosity, what kind of computer do you have? I've never heard of a computer that makes installing anything difficult - they have to be built for easy access by their own people to quickly fix or add things in, too. You didn't perhaps remove the wrong panel, right?

This is exactly why I refuse to buy pre-built computers: you never have to deal with proprietary BS.

i have a HP Pavillion ### (number escapes me.

I have installed a graphics car, and ethernet card, etc..... with no problem..

the Bays where the two drives are encased in their own metal box, which is installed in the case in such a way, that I would have to remove the fan first to get access to the screws to get the drives out....

once i realized i had to start removing other parts of the computer to get to the beginnig aspects of the drives, i said 'the hell with it'.....rather pay a few bux and have a 'pro' do it, then me really screw things up....

obviously, i still don't know if that was a good idea or not!?!?
