Since i'm on a metal kick lately, i thought i'd see what metal bands my fellow obnerites are into.

Here's my top 5 of all time, including their best album:

01 at the gates [swe] : slaughter of the soul

02 iron maiden [uk] : piece of mind

03 darkthrone [nor] : a blaze in the nothern sky

04 entombed [swe] : left hand path

05 slayer [us] : reign in blood

I'd nominate Motorhead too.

At the moment . . . and in no particular order:

Godflesh: Selfless
Slayer: Seasons in the Abyss
Death Angel: Act III
The Jesus Lizard: Shot
Pelican: Australasia
Megadeth: Rust in Peace
Mastodon: Remission
Iron Maiden: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Anthrax: toss-up betwixt Persistence of Time and Sound of White Noise (I know, neither are most likely to be a choice of most fans)
Metallica: And Justice For All
Meshuggah: Nothing

Yeah, I know, that's 11 (or 12, if you count both Anthrax albums.)

I've never been a huge metalhead, but had friends who were and did some sampling through the years. Some I still listen to and enjoy:

Acid Bath shame they had to call it quits after Audie Pitre died in the car accident. The Gacy & Kevorkian album covers, odd samples and fun to play loud.

Pantera contributed a reoccuring soundtrack to the dorm years.

Type O Negative are some of the funniest motherfuckers around. Maybe not as hard or gothy, but I still think it fits and they get in on "Unnaturally Coping With The Natural Beauty Of Infidelity".

Some songs also popped up from time to time by the likes of Sepultura, Megadeth, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Anthrax and Clutch. Oh yeah, and Anal Cunt.

That new COC album is really good. So greasy and dirty feeling. It's like audio-oil, and it doesn't wash off easily.

I'll nominate 3... these stand out as something I'll reach for 15ish years later.

The God Machine - I've pimped them enough through the years... somebody familiar with them start a thread and I'll rave. "Scenes from the Second Storey". Tool took their ideas and execution and brought it to the masses. Only without the good hooks :)............. Unfortunately, a death in the band (brain tumor of all things) ended TGM before they hit huge. Robin Proper Shepard went on to found Flower Shop records in England and Germany and put out multiple albums including his own Sophia and also Toshack Highway... (TGM and Swervedriver were tour mates in the UK). Anyway, The God Machine's "Scenes from the second storey" on the old Fiction records (Cure's label I believe) was the biggest impact on me in the early 90's that I've ever had. And it qualifies as metal.

Hanoi Rocks - just a great band... other than the look, hard to call them metal. "Two steps from the move" needs to be in your collection. Vince Neil (Hanoi Rocks was opening up for Motley Crue on a tour) killed Hanoi member Razzle while fucked up. Hanoi Rocks ended that day while the piece of shit Motley Crue went on. A couple of years ago, Motley Crue releases a collection of songs called "Songs to crash your car to". I'm not usually PC, but it really was offensive to me as a Hanoi Rocks fan to call an album "songs to crash your car to" since Motley Vince actually wrecked his car and killed his passenger... and consequently killed one of the best bands of the mid to late 80's.

Iron Maiden - agree 100% on "Piece of Mind". That was my record of choice in my troubled teen years with my huge Eddie in chains silkscreen print hanging over my bed. Still a great album.

.... and.... Got to give a shoutout to Judas Priest's "Turbo Lover".... think I was the only one loving it tho.

God Machine Fucking rock.

Mine (in no particular order until I figure it out):

Black Sabbath
Opeth
Shape of Despair
...um...

I'm mostly an old-schooler, so I'd probably have to add Scorps and Judas Priest in there, but...they're not really metal...really love that one Neurosis album, Eye of Every Storm, but that's their best album, I haven't liked others as much as that one. Hmmm...let me think about that some more, my sleep-deprived brain is beckoning me to bed...

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot Tool...one more...

RE: Hanoi Rocks I have a old concert of them taped of the television about 15 years ago. It's fantastic. Matt Monroe was abit scary lookin' though! I especially liked that the guitarist wears a red bowler hat.

I haven't really listened to Metal for years but here's my Top 5 (well a Top 5 off the top of my head).

1) Sepultura - Arise
2) Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
3) Dio - The Last In Line
4) Iron Maiden - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
5) Judas Priest - Painkiller

Nice list. Those are all high quality metal albums but I think I'll have to go with...

1) Metallica - Master Of Puppets
2) GNR - Appetite For Destruction
3) Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
4) Black Sabbath - s/t
5) Kiss - Destroyer

Man, there are so many others worth mentioning though...

Black Sabbath
Opeth

1. Sepultura (Beneath The Remains, Arise, Chaos AD, Roots)
2. Mastodon (Remission, Leviathan)
3. Metallica (Kill 'Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, $5.98 EP, ...And Justice For All)
4. Faith No More (The Real Thing, Angel Dust)
5. Slayer (South Of Heaven, Seasons In The Abyss)

Oh yeah, for my not-really-metal-but heavy-enough nomination I gotta include some Melvins (Houdini, Stoner Witch)

And my shamefully-unknown-great-album I'll go with Frodus And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea, although this is heavy as in Fugazi, not Sepultura heavy.

1. Metallica (pre Black album)
2. Iron Maiden (anything between Number of the Beast and Seventh Son...)
3. Slayer (Rein in Blood and South of Heaven are strong)
4. Ozzy-era Black Sabbath combined with early Ozzy solo period
5. Anthrax (Among the Living era)

My faves generally fall under "hard rock" rather than "metal", but here are my faves:

1. Iron Maiden: Killers
2. Judas Priest: Sad Wings Of Destiny
3. Ozzy Osbourne: Diary Of A Madman
4. AC/DC: Powerage
5. Circus Of Power: Circus Of Power

I don't conser Motorhead to be heavy metal, I find 'em to be much closer to punk. Likewise, The Angels/Angel City aren't really metal either, although their album "Face To Face" is tremendous.

Top five of all time is pretty tough, but off the top of my head:

Metallica - Master of Puppets
Judas Priest - British Steel
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Black Sabbath - Volume 4
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Bathory - Twilight of the Gods
Skyclad - Jonah's Ark

Lately I've been listening to the new Candlemass album and this metal/hardcore band from Savannah, GA called Circle Takes the Square. And System of a Down's new one.

$80 dollars?!!

You're shittin' me. I have the cd and have seen other copies of it around here before. If I ever find one again I'll buy it on the spot. I had no idea it was so rare. I think their earlier LP's (before they were on Def American) are even harder to find now.

Black Sabbath - Paranoid
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
Judas Priest - British Steel (or Hell Bent For Leather, it's a toss-up)
Def Leppard - Pyromania (shut up, I know they're wuss-metal, but this album's great!)
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz

I've been getting back into metal recently, too. It's tough to remember what the hell I was listening to (aside from Maiden and Priest) back in 1982, but these are the albums I remember loving. And, having actually LISTENED to Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Sabbath, and Judas Priest recently, I can honestly say that all that early-80's stuff they dod still stands up.
