I just want you guys to know how happy I am to be part of your indie clubhouse. It's important as part of a tighly-knit hipster community that we all like the right things. I do like the right things, don't I?

Please say yes. Being accepted by this very real and tangible indie clubhouse is such a dear thing to me.

if i had more vitriol in me, i would've had a blast with this thread. all of my favorite things in one place: arcade fire hype(?), wrens backlash, stuff.

y'all should check out the hold steady.

Agreed on the EP, but don't you think "Headlights" is prettily shittily recorded? I do. And as such, I think there are better tracks on the album: "Submarine", eg.

It may very well be shittily recorded, but perhaps I haven't noticed over my incessantly tapping foot. Besides, his voice is kind of shitty ALL the time, and that hasn't stopped me.

You are ABSOLUTELY, OBJECTIVELY WRONG that there are better tracks on the album, though. IMO

You like Lifter Puller? I've not heard the hold steady, but aren't they related?

I'm feeling pretty meh about this album. It's not bad, but certainly not good enough to make any new wrinkles in my grey matter. One complaint is the album's melodramatic conceit, which seems calculated and boring to me. Some of the music is very nice, but it will not be likely to make my top 20 or 50 for 2004.

np: the arcade fire - wake up

i think it is absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking.
i also think, which may be a little strange, that the harmonies and the lush orchestration actually create a frequency that can only be described as pure beauty. you can't actually hear it, but you can feel it.

yeah, this album is totally aces. it took me a long time to hear it properly, but worthwhile. i saw them last week and was also impressed.

anyone who's seen them lately has probably heard their cover of "this must be the place (naive melody)" by talking heads. i just got a pretty good quality mp3 of their studio version. so, i'm on the clevercactus if you want.

I'll give my one-phrase opinion of The Arcade Fire:

LISTEN TO THE HOLD STEADY

I'm not all that good at the message board quoting (nee KPH), but Some Finn'l kick the vitriol level up quite a bit. No need for a Costco Card with that one - hell, one of the new songs talks about this affect...

"all your favorite movies. they ain't all that funny. if you ain't that high. and i ain't that high. all your favorite books. they wouldn't seem so well written if you were just a little bit more well read. jack kerouac is dead. he drank himself to death. i just ain't that high. all your favorite songs wouldn't seem so sad. if you weren't so depressed. elliott smith seems like a mess to me. and you cry way too easily."

The Hold Steady has something to do with The Arcade Fire?

More specifically, that quote is somehow relevant to people liking Funeral?

I don't want to read too much into your comments and choice of quotes and raise the **vitriol** level any higher in this thread, but it would seem you're indulging in some pretty blatant (and hypocritical) snobbery here.

And I'm not an Elliott Smith or Kerouac fan. I'm taking no specific offense at that quote, just its implications as to the validity of people's tastes. This sort of thing has been a touchy subject with me recently.

Oh, Drinky Crow. If your taste was as refined as his, you wouldn't like Arcade Fire. You should listen to clearly superior bands, like the ones he listens to. It's much better from up there.

I agree this is the best album of the year so far. It's one of the only albums this year I've truly enjoyed for an extended period of time. I don't have the EP but need it. I saw them last weekend in Newport, KY and they were amazing. The venue was the Southgate House which is the birthplace of the man who invented the Tommy Gun. Thought that was interesting. Was anyone else there by chance?
