There's a limited market for songs about Louis Riel.

So true. I have a Thee Headcoats 7" with a song called Louis Riel on it. It's basically "Louie Louie" with the lyrics changed.

Gordon Lightfoot cornered the market on Canadian history, so Bruce Cockburn had to rail about Central America and The Band about the Deep South.

Yes. Levon Helm is from eastern Arkansas.

I read a while back that "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" was written to shut him up, since he kept bitching about a song about the South during the Civil War.

Really? I always thought that Robertson used Helm to his advantage. Sorta like-"See, we can do songs about the south-we've got a geuinine southerner to sing them."

This was a long time ago, and I don't remember the source, so I may be wrong, Steve. Either way, it makes a funny anecdote.

That Tim McGraw tune was huge on CMT when it was out. HUGE. Because pop country fans are sheep. Sheep with bad taste.

I dated a pop country fan for a while, she dragged me to the Boot Scoot'n Saloon on many occasions where i tried to catch a buzz, but not get so drunk that I couldn't defend myself in case any of the evil eyes i was getting turned into something slightly more evil.

In ack-chill fack, Robertson presented the song to the band and Helm had a major problem with this more-northern-than-northerner's take on the Civil War. Robertson rewrote it with Helm's advice.

And us Canadians have nominated ourselves as official non-biased chroniclers and/or critics of North American history - because you 'muricans do such a shitty job of it.

Whoa. I didn't realize this song was about your kind of Indian.

William Lyon McKenzie, now there's an inspirational goldmine.

oh, for the love of God... kill me now. Horrible, horrible lyrics. Not only offensive but reminiscent of a five year old's "poetry."
