What are some good music magazines these days? I'm going to head over to Borders in a little bit to pick something up, but I can't figure out what's good anymore. They don't carry CMJ anymore, so you can rule that out.

I'm a fan of Paste and Harp.

And seeing as we have similar taste in music Borg I think you may like them too.

Interestingly, I picked up my first issue of Paste last week (Billy Corgan on the cover) and I enjoyed it very much!

I'll check out Harp next. :)

My favourites:

Outburn -- they don't cover anyone I care about any more (I wonder what this says -- their industrial/gothic/synthpop/futurepop/EBM/metal person is really bad about turning their interviews in on time, perhaps?), but the reviews are still killer -- in the first sentence, you know whether or not you want to read the rest of the review.
Wire -- 99% of the stuff I've never heard of before, but their descriptions make me want to go out and buy everything. I have to be careful with this one.
Ei -- new ish just came out.
Grooves -- loads of electronica, without being all "dancey" 'n'stuff.
Progression -- prog, what can I say?
Grimoire -- for the (nasty-ass) girls.
Gothic Beauty -- not really a music magazine, but I dig freaky chicks.

I mean, your best bet is to just scan the cover (or the TOC) and see if any of the articles interest you. And/or the reviews.

Urb is worth looking at, like I did today. Haven't bought a issue in about 4 years though after almost 10 years of getting every issue.

Mojo is the king, just too damn expensive. If you're an Oasis fan I'd track down this months issue

I guess I'm a bit Dalenish in this respect as I think even the worse Brit music mag is preferable to any American one.

Picked up my first issue of "Under The Radar" today. I'm pissed I didn't know about this mag before. It's great. An issue for every season.

In this one (Summer '05) there's a great in depth look about britpop and they interview bunch of bands (elastica, blur, sleeper, lush, gene ...etc.) and a "where are they now?" section on them all.

Pretty sweet.

So...where are they now? IIRC, Miki doesn't make music any more, and the other gal is in Sing Sing (the group, not the prison)?

Paste, Filter, and Under the Radar are the best as far as I can tell.

I still need to find one I really like. I buy Filter on occasion, but always end up rolling my eyes at some of their reviews.

besides the ones i mentioned, i forgot mojo. and i take back filter, because it's pretty much pitchfork in print.

also, i re-newed my subscription to URB a few months ago because they started doing more rock reviews and they tend to be decent. it's an la-based magazine mostly about dj culture & gear, electronic music, now incorporating more rock.

Paste and Magnet. I have subscriptions to both. Used to read Blender but it's gotten schlocky lately. If you can track it down, try Exclaim from here in Canada. It's free and always excellent.
