I'm four songs in and I like it. It might take some getting use to. Doorbell stands out right now.

i only have "white blood cells" and always thought it was boring/terrible with one or two songs that i liked.

i read something about this one that made me interested, so i DL'ed a few songs and really like it. I might pick it up.

this has more of a "Exile on Main St" feel to me.

Dalen,
good call. this is whiskey drinking music. I can also hear some Exile hints. it has a similar production. Also the Denial Twist kicks ass..

What is a good piano driven track to check out?

My favorite two piece isn't these guys and frankly, I never found these two interesting. That little preview on the Pitchfork review yesterday made me want to hear this though.

compared to their earlier stuff, after almost listening all the way through, it is deliciously weird (i dont even know how to spell that). also picked up today Set Yourself On Fire by Stars, which i had never heard of, but it looked fun. having opened it, but not listened to it yet i am a but put of by their ugliness and their sort of faux-morbid seeming cover art etcetera, but we shall see.

This album is pretty disappointing, IMHO. They had such a great track record for the last three albums and this one can’t touch any of those. It does have a certain charm about it but doesn’t have that extra something that made their other records better and something to talk about.

Dalen is OTM about how people will view this album but I think a few years from now this won’t be the White Stripes album you will be playing. ILM talked, a few days ago, about how this album will be released with a special player but I can’t be bothered about looking it up.

Thanks again Dalen, as I think you know what I’m talking about. I also need to talk to you about something but will do so on slsk next time we both are on.

Why is it that nobody liked Elephant until it was appropriate to praise it in the diss of a newer record?

Elephant is good. So is Get Behind Me Satan. I bet White Stripes fans will be split pretty evenly among which of these 5 records is the one they listen to the most. For me, I think this could be the one, and if not, it's White Blood Cells.

1.) WBC
2.) ...Satan
3.) Elephant
--- great/really-good border ---
4.) De Stijl
--- really/pretty good border ---
5.) S/T

Well I think De Stijl is the clearly their best album and White Blood Cells is clearly the worst. I was always weird to me that it was their poorest effort that actually broke them into the mainstream.

Having said that I don't think they have ever released a 'bad' or even 'average' album and their consistancy over five albums now makes them one of the landmark groups of this decade.

I've been through it once and while none of the songs except Blue Orchid and Take, Take, Take have really stood out, I like the direction. I'm predicting this will be a grower for me where White Blood Cells and Elephant caught me right away and faded a little with time.

I will say I think Blue Orchid may be the only single on this album.

Not on my work machine, but someone on Colinswood might be able to send it your way before I get home.

Yup. It's the only one I still play on occasion. I think Elephant had a shelf life of four days. They've been playing Blue Orchid on the Underground Garage, and I am way less than blown away. This is not an album for which I'll drop bucks.

I listen to their first three records still, but still find Elephant and this one uninteresting.
