my best friend lives out there and works for some nonprofit music program, i'll ask him tonight.

"Philly types"? I resent that! I grew up in the burbs and live there now and while i'm a little bigger than jewels i'm like 40x more lazy. Don't ask me about the other guys, nobody does shit around here.

btw, just for the record, I'm married to a "Philly type" so I harbor no resentment against them!

(side note Cotton: we watched the men's US Pro Cycling championship coverage on OLN this past weekend... it took place in Philly. My husband was all, "I wonder if they'll make 'em ride up Manayunk Wall" and sure enough they did.)

Jewels, re: open mic. I'm sure there are a TON of places here in Portland that might work. One place that I am pretty familiar with is Laurelthirst Public House. They tend to be on the acoustic roots rock side. Also, there's the Red and Black Cafe. Pretty low-key, and they serve beer and coffee, so the crowd is mixed sometimes. You might want to check into some of the McMenamin's places (www.mcmenamins.com), maybe the White Eagle has open-mic night? If I find anything else, I'll let you know.

The Green Room: http://www.grpub.net/ (haven't been here, so I have no idea how the scene is)
Produce Row Cafe: been here before, and I know they have music, but don't know if it's booked or open

i ended up playing at Produce Row.
it was pretty cool, though i felt a bit too far from the crowd.

a few folks paid close attention, and everyone was very nice.
after taking in too much to drink i gave out all the CD's i brought.
