I'm clearing my flat at the moment because I have workmen coming round. I'm not that pleased about it to be honest. But the really depressing thing about the clearing up process is the amount of magazines I've got. I've literally got hundreds maybe even nudging into four figures. I've pretty much stopped buying magazines now but for a good 15 years I picked up EVERY issue of 6 or 7 titles - Record Collector, Mojo, Q, Uncut etc.

Anyway I'm kinda pissed off right now and don't want to have to go through this again but at the same time I'm not sure if I want to chuck all these magazines. I'm also not sure what I'd do if I did want to get rid of them because there's lots of them.

What to do? Keep them? Ditch them? Am I just annoyed because I actually have to DO STUFF for once or is this a genuine hassle/issue?

i just went through that.
i had TONS of magazines. (i used to subscribe to several and would also pick stuff up at the book store.)

last week, actually, i went through them all....and first tossed everything i had no interest in anymore. then i went back through and quickly looked at headlines and paged through to see what i wanted to go back in read.

basically i just wanted to get rid of stuff. i ended up tossing all the music mags and only kept the utne readers and mother jones.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Throw 'em away. I did the same for many years and finally realized that I wasn't going to spend time to sit and read them again.

Yea, I should do this also. I have piles and piles of old magazines which I'll never reread. Why is throwing them away so hard?

I poop a lot.
So I find old magazines to come in very handy.

I have a bunch of old Thrasher Skateboard Magazines that I'll keep for like ever...But the other stuff just seems to accumulate and should be tossed every so often...

Glossy paper doesn't seem to me as is it would be useful in that sort of situation.

I keep some and get rid of or give away the others to my more magazine starved compadres. Or to Uncle Brian for the lobby of his law office.

I'm stoked to have recently found a place near my house that recycles magazines. You should definitely look into that before throwing 18,000 old magazines into the trash.

I used to have Maxim 3-like 60, stacked nicely and stuff...

I thought I would revist them, but never did..

I began individually selling em on ebay, and made a killing on some of the earlier issues...

now a days, if there is an article or something i really want, I just tear it out....

dont got the room to be a pack rat anymore.

yeah but who the fuck goes back and reads old maxims? is there some tara reid interview that really got to you on something?

i go back and reread old muic rqags all the time, especially the massive ones like BTO, Magnet, Skyscraper, etc...

i hold them for about 2-3 years then purge them all to the recycle place when the lady threatens me. not that her stacks of Juxtapoz are cleaned regularly...

Only National Geographic and Harper's usually make the cut and don't get tossed. The music rags, unless special editions of some sort, get binned within 2-3 months.

I keep everything too, I'll probably start turfing those issues that hold no interest at all, and keep the others. I start leafing through the old SPINs not too long ago and was very glad I didn't toss them. They were great to read.

I also have old Maxims and FHMs lying around. Haven't gotten rid of those yet either. I guess I like reading about Tara Reid.

my favorite part of old magazines is the letters to the editors.

things like, "pearl jam are the worst band ever, who is going to even know their name in 10 years"

and "why did you put Run DMC on the cover, they aren't even musicians and all the do is insight violence and hatred" (Run DMC? they are so cute and fun.)

and about the Spin Doctors, "finally, a real band on the cover"

and so forth.

great stuff.

I had a fine collection of probably every issue of RS 95-00, GQ 92-00, Spin 95-00 and verious odds and sods, including SI, ESPN, Esquire, Nat Geo, Time, Newsweek, New York Times Magazines, etc...

I moved it to my grandmother's boathouse (which by this time was a glorified storage space) and my aunt went through and thew out all of those + 3/4 of my other shit and tried to give my books charity.

I am still very unhappy about this.

i just went thru this a few months ago. threw 90% of magz away. but i had real expensive ones like billboard. the only reason i didn't want to chuck my magz was just in case they'd be worth some big $ in a few years (decades).

Oh man. It's bad enough you lost all of that gear, but that someone MADE the decision for you? I can feel my blood pressure increasing just imagining that.

When I was yonger, I would never throw away my magazines. Over the years, they just became a pain in the ass whenever I moved, so i finally broke them all down by cutting out all the pictures and reviews I liked.

Ditto. I just started the mass weeding process. I don't have as many as I used to, but I still have quite a bit.

I buy all diff kinds(I admit, I'm a girl and I do like some cool fashion beauty tips every so often) so I've gotten into the habit of pulling out articles and such I like and now I keep them in a binder.

I'm tired of them being shoved in a basket or in a side table cabinet. No need for that.
