I grew up near Buffalo, which has a slight midwestern-y accent (After I left, I began to realize that Buffalo and Western/Central NY is more midwest than it is east). I don't have the real hard 'a' that a lot of my relatives do, but I constantly get made fun of for the way I say words like "fire" and "tire"...something about my "I's" on those "-ire" words. That's pretty much it.

I've spent a lot of time in Ontario (Toronto area, as well as northern Ont), and a-boot might not be the best way to describe it, but there is something there.

When I worked in the Midwest I was told I had a thick southern accent. It doesn't come out that much except on certain words.

If I'm drunk and a lot of "I ain't"'s start flying then it could be classified, by Loogar at one point, as "hick". I resent this.

Benjy, I've hung with you a couple of times now, and yes, you have a Southern accent, but I wouldn't define it as hillbilly, redneck or hick, just "Georgia".

I'm southern through and through. And wouldn't have it any other way.

Like most folks, I guess mine depnds on my surroundings and intoxication. I have a pretty straightforward voice slightly tinged with a hint of southern on one end of the meter and full blown redneck at the other.

I also use expressions and ennunciations of certain words in a Philly accent after having lived and hung out with a native for many years during college. "Yo" It annoys the shit out of people.

The Sen. and I actually had a brief convo about this same subject.

Oh, and for the record, Derris definitely talks more southern than all of us other GA boys; because he is a hillbilly.....

Jeez, at last, thank you.

Every one who makes audible speech has "an accent"... allphonemes, intonation, can all be traced to geography, ethnicity, generation, education, and class. There is a sense that BBC standard, or NBC Standard (usually northern Illinois) is somehow a center point from which to measure how far other accents stray from it... but we ALL have accents.

Mine is coastal California, mid-20th century, with a dash of Canadian.

you're damn right it does. Actually, my pronounciation of it comes out more like "Yao" than anything. Rocky III-V killed that word for a lot of us.

Yeah. It's an accent totally relative?

Some of my friends maintain that I pronouce certain words strangely: e.g. "pai-ants" instead of "pahts"; and "ayyggs" instead of "ehggs".

I've had strangers tell me that I sound like I have an accent: Maritime, Texan, British. Kind of weird. The correct one should be "English Montrealer" whatever the hell that is.

yeah, i say it "yao"; a fake northern accent is a good thing to have in Atlanta considering the amount of filthy carpetbaggers that live here now.....

People always ask me where I'm originally from, because I don't sound like a Georgian or a northerner. Though I do say "y'all". I grew up in Cincinnati, so I have that Cincy non-accent (different than a northern Ohio accent, for sure.), mixed with just a tinge of southern.

I've always found the results of the study inconclusive and interesting because of that fact.

What? She's cuckoo! Your accent is on the 'softer' side only cuz you're soft-spoken. With that said, when you curse, you do sound like a proper Motherwellian. ;)

As for me...uhm...I sound American? Those that have spoken to me -- what do you think?

And Dri? Dude, when you're drunk, you TOTALLY sound like you're from the Valley! Haha!
