I never participated in any track & field events, but I don't believe it would be out of the realm of possibility that he doesn't see her because he is focusing on the job at hand, maybe even to the point of counting his steps or maintaining a particular rhythm.

My favorite part is that her shoulder blades are the first part of her body to come crashing back to earth.
